Age-Friendly Briefing

Older Americans Month 2018

Every May, the Administration on Aging, part of the Administration for Community Living, leads our nation's observance of Older American's Month. The 2018 theme, Engage at Every Age, emphasizes that you are never too old (or young) to take part in activities that can enrich your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It also celebrates the many ways in which older adults make a difference in our communities.

Participating in activities that promote mental and physical wellness, offering your wisdom and experience to the next generation, seeking the mentorship of someone with more life experience than you—those are just a few examples of what being engaged can mean. No matter where you are in your life, there is no better time than now to start. We hope you will join in and Engage at Every Age!

The Town of Cutler Bay received a $15,000 AARP Community Challenge Grant from AARP. The grant made it possible for the Town of Cutler Bay to install outdoor fitness equipment at Cutler Ridge Park, and on February 27 a ribbon cutting ceremony took place at the park. The grant was part of AARP's Community Challenge, begun in 2017, in which the organization invested nearly $780,000 to "create change and improve the quality of life" for people of all ages in communities nationwide.

FindaRideFlorida.org Helps Older Adults Stay Safe and Mobile for Life

The Florida Department of Transportation’s Safe Mobility for Life Program partnered with the University of Florida, Institute for Mobility, Activity, & Participation to launch FindaRideFlorida.org, an online listing of transportation service providers throughout all of the state’s 67 counties. Older adults looking for transportation options beyond their driver’s seat, can take advantage of Florida’s new and improved statewide resource.

Users can visit FindaRideFlorida.org to enter where they would like to start and end their trip, then click on “Find a Ride,” and the site will populate a list of transportation service providers that can take them where they want to go. The list appears in alphabetical order and contact information is provided. FindaRideFlorida.org is helping adults to stay safe and mobile for life.

Guide To Creating An Age-Friendly Festival

On October 28,2017, the FIRST Age-Friendly Festival (AFF) in the U.S. was held in Sarasota, Florida. The AFF in Sarasota –sparked by the Age-Friendly Sarasota (AFS)initiative–was a gift to the community from The Patterson Foundation, one of the founding partners in the AFS movement. With the festival being the first of its kind in the nation, a template or reference guide did not exist for the Sarasota AFF planning team. That, however, is not the case for other communities! View the guide and learn more here.
