OPEN DAY - SATURDAY 12TH MAY

It's our big big day - and there are things you need to know:

If previous open days can be our guide we will welcome around 400 visitors to our club next Saturday afternoon.

Helping out

With such a huge number of visitors expected,  we need a huge number of our members to be on site to - meet and greet our guests, help them park, serve them tea, show them around, take them out sailing, provide safety boat cover, show them our class boats, and generally be the friendly faces of Papercourt.  If you have not signed up with Jeremy Riley or Jeremy Sumeray yet - please email jeremyriley.uk@gmail.com as soon as possible.  He is particularly keen to hear from instructors or experienced sailors who can take people out for taster sails in the club's fleet of two handed boats.

Making Cakes
We have promised free tea and cake to all our visitors, so we need the cakes to feed them - if you can bake or buy some small cakes, cookies, or anything else suitable, please bring them to the club on Saturday morning and leave in the back of the galley - if you want your tins back, label them!

Parking

The visitors will come by car, so we need to make sure there is space in the car park.  If you are sailing/training in the morning and not staying for the afternoon, please make sure you pack up and clear the car park as soon as possible after your morning sailing ends;  and PLEASE PLEASE if you are staying, make sure you are taking up as little space in the car park as possible - and park within the lines.  (Every week we see cars taking up more than one space - they have been carefully marked out to be big enough so be thoughtful even if when you arrive at 9.00 am  the car park is not busy)

No Club Sailing on Saturday after 12.00

As the jetties will be incredibly busy taking out guests out for taster sails, unfortunately we cannot accommodate cruising on the afternoon of the Open Day.  Many of our visitors get this one chance to experience sailing, whilst we are lucky enough to be able to sail throughout the year.  If you want to sail, please contact Jeremy Riley as above to offer to take out visitors.

Taster Sails are for Visitors only

In past years, members have asked if they can go out on the taster sails - this is not really possible as we get long queues at the jetties.  If you want to try one of the club boats, hire one on a Wednesday or at the weekends, or speak to one of the instructors and they will arrange to take you out at some other time.

Encourage your Friends and Family, Work Colleagues, Gym acquaintances, Tennis Club members, etc etc and everyone else to come along and see where we are and what we do.

GDPR - Papercourt and You

You will all have been bombarded with emails from lots of companies about signing up for the new GDPR - General Data Protection Regulations which come into force on 25th May 2018.  There are a small number of members who have not given us formal consent to use their personal data.  This is probably because they joined the Club before we introduced the current New Member's Declaration which covers the subject.

All those members affected will already have received an email from Membership, but some people have not responded, so you will receive a further email from Membership@papercourt-sc.org.uk in the next 24 hours.  To enable the club to comply with new regulations and for you to continue to receive the newsletter and other correspondence from the Club please look out for the email, checking your spam boxes too, and respond as soon as possible.

Those members who joined the club using the new declaration need to do nothing, and please note that the member who signed the form, signed on behalf of all family members.

Duties and the Newsletter

Following on from the above, it has come to our attention that at present only the principal family member is receiving the newsletter and we will shortly be adding any other adult family members who are eligible for duties to the mailing list so that they receive the reminders in the newsletter about when to sign up for duties.

Doing Duties on behalf of another family Member

If by any chance you are in a family where one family member does all the duties for their partner, or older children (which is fine by us),  please ensure that you sign up for the duties in their name so that the system does not allocate them other duties.  Family or joint memberships require all adults and cadets over 16 to do two duties per year, and there are no exceptions.

Topper Open - Sunday 13th May

Perfect opportunity for Papercourt Topper Sailors to enter an open meeting on home ground - sign up details on the poster.

If you are an old hand at open meetings or if this is your first one, come along to our Home event.

For Sale and Wanted - Particularly Oppies

With all our new beginners there is a shortage of Oppies available at the club.  If you have an Oppie sitting on the racks that your family have outgrown for one reason of another, why not pass it on to someone else.  You can put an advertisement on the board in the front hall at the club - or.................

Did you know that you can also place  for sale and wanted advertisements on the club website - its completely free - just go to this link:
https://www.papercourt-sc.org.uk/for-sale-wanted/
and follow the instructions.

Clubhouse Floor

The new clubhouse floor is very smart, but there are still one or two issues that need fixing under the warranty.   Watch out for details in the next newsletter.  This work will be done during the week of 21st May.  Access to the clubhouse will be maintained, but not necessarily through the usual route.

Sailability

Sailability is back for the summer in full swing on first, third and if there is one, the fifth Friday of each month from 12 o'clock.   We are always on the lookout for volunteers to help out, whether it's onshore or in the boats.   You don't need to make a long term commitment, every little helps, so if you would like to know more, or volunteer, please get in touch with John Beynon on sailability@papercourt-sc.org.uk

If you know of anyone who would benefit from the Sailability opportunity, with physical or other disabilities, please contact John to see how Sailability can help them get afloat.  We now have our fabulous Wheelie Boat which can take wheelchairs afloat too.

Ripley

Some of you may remember that our youth section did a sponsored sail some time ago to sponsor a puppy for Guide Dogs For the Blind and we have just heard that Ripley the dog has just become a fully qualified Guide Dog - We should all be proud of both our young sailors and their sponsored dog.
Speed Limits!

Cars

Most especially on Saturday mornings, but really at any time, please remember that the speed limit in the car park is 10mph - there are always people wandering around carrying their boat kit, and sometimes they forget to keep an eye out for cars coming fast down the hill from the gate.

Safety Boats

Unless there is danger to life, please do not drive the safety boats at top speed down the lake - the wash disturbs our friends the fishermen, and damages the banks.

Also if it is a light wind day, and boats are racing please go slowly so that their carefully set sails are not rocked too and fro by unnecessary wash.

It saves on fuel too - which is in everyone's interest
.

A couple of reminders
Insurance - in accordance with the club byelaws every boat should have insurance for public liability up to £2,000,000.  If you buy a boat from another member or bring a new boat on site, please make sure you have arranged your insurance before setting sail.
