The past month or so has seen JETAA Wellington's members getting together to enjoy fun hands-on Japanese cultural experiences like ikebana flower arranging and making hand-rolled sushi. Don't worry if you missed out, as there's plenty more to come! Aside from our events, this year also sees the biannual Japan Festival in Wellington return. Keen to get involved? Find more info below!

This month's newsletter covers:

  • An open invitation to meet this year's new JETs for dinner
  • Calls for Japan Festival and JETAA volunteers
  • News and updates about what JETAA Wellington has been up to
As always, JETAA is open to all JET Programme alumni from anywhere in the world, so if you'd like to get involved or share an idea or two, we'd love hear what you have to say. We've set up a new anonymous feedback form for your comments on this newsletter or anything else JETAA Wellington does. Of course, you can also shoot us an email, or reach out via our Facebook page or Twitter. We're also on Instagram!

News & Updates
Volunteer with the Wellington Japan Festival

The trust that organizes the fantastic biannual Japan Festival in Wellington is in need of volunteers! If you've enjoyed the festival in the past and want to help this year's event be the best it can be, here's some of the roles in need of someone to take them on:
  • Stagehands
  • Performer liaison
  • MCs
  • Floorplan layout design
  • Social media
  • And more!
Some volunteers are needed right away, while others won't be needed until October closer to the event, so if your plate's a bit full at the moment but you still want to help, get in touch with us via email, social media, or at our next event!
Join us for the Departing JETs Q&A Dinner

It's that time of year again! There'll soon be a new batch of fresh-faced JETs leaving Wellington to start their Japan adventure, which means JETAA will be there to help them get ready! As in previous years, we'll be hosting a big, friendly dinner with the soon-to-be JETs and Wellington's JET alumni.

We're looking for alumni who lived in all different areas of Japan at all different times, so let us know if you're keen to come out and share some stories and wisdom! We had a great time last year, and hope to see you there.

JETAA Wellington is Looking for a Treasurer and Jkaiwa Rep!
At this year's Annual General Meeting, we were lucky enough to have some dedicated volunteers step up to keep JETAA Wellington's executive committee running smoothly for another year. However, we still have two roles that we need someone to help with.
  • Treasurer - Keeps track of our spending and budget, holds tightly onto receipts
  • Jkaiwa Rep - Helps keep the Jkaiwa conversation classes running and improving
All of JETAA Wellington’s events and resources (like this newsletter!) are only possible thanks to the heroic efforts of the alumni volunteers that make up the committee. If you've been wanting to stay connected with the Japanese community while also helping make it better, reach out to us via email, Facebook, Twitter, or randomly on the street!
Hands-On With Some Ikebana Flower Arranging

On a sunny Saturday afternoon in Seatoun, JETAA Wellington organized a special hands-on lesson in ikebana, the Japanese art of flower-arranging. The event was hosted by Ikebana Wellington, and allowed our members who joined in to try making their very own floral works of art. We even had a JET alumni come all the way down from Palmerston North with their family!

To see more photos and learn more about how you can do some flower-arranging of your own, check out the full story on our website.

A Hand-Rolling Masterclass with Yoshi Sushi
In coordination with JET alumni Helen Kono and her husband Yoshi, JETAA Wellington organized a scrumptious sushi-making class at Yoshi Sushi & Bento‘s beautiful new location in Press Hall. The event was one of our busiest in recent months, with lots of new friendly faces showing up to hang out and learn how to roll with our usual lineup of members. We had a great time learning how to make and eat a variety of delicious sushi rolls with these Wellington pros!

For more photos of the fun event, check out our website or Facebook.
