Message from the PTA

Hello North Davis Families,

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. Our NDE teachers go above and beyond each and every day to make sure all our students are safe, learning, and thriving. Though I hope they know how loved they are, this week is an another opportunity to shower our teachers with a little extra attention and thanks.

All classes have been asked to participate in the "Flower from your Garden" project this Wednesday, May 9th. Please send your child to school with a flower.  A single stem or sprig of green is fine - it does not need to come from a store or florist. If each student brings a flower and puts it in the vase outside of class that morning, the teacher will have a lovely bouquet.

The PTA is also putting together an amazing Hawaiian/Tropical Luau Lunch (tiki bar included!) for all the teachers to have a fun relaxing special lunch together.

A big thank you is due to Jen Maloney, Kendra Shigemota, Gloria Purnell, and Kerry MacKay for coordinating these teacher appreciation activities.

Do check in with your class parent for additional activities. And if you have any additional questions, please contact Kendra Shigematsu (
kshig@sbcglobal.net) or Kerry MacKay (mackaymccluakie@gmail.com).

May is a busy month. Please take some time to mark up your calendars with the various meetings and activities coming up, such as the Teacher Scoop Night and the Makerfaire! All amazing stuff!

I'd like to highlight the Maker Faire coming up on May 23rd. This event will be an opportunity to come as a whole family and create and make together. There will be tables of materials to use, demonstrations, and much more.
Do your children create at home? If they do, they are welcome to sign up to show off their creations at this Maker Faire. There is a sign up genius below to learn more!

Our final PTA meeting will be May 15th. NDE is adopting a new Positive Behavior Interventions Support (PBIS) program across ALL grade levels next year. If you are interested in learning more about this, please come to the meeting. Parent awareness and feedback is essential to this new program's success, so please do take this opportunity to learn more!

We will also work to pre-approve next year's budget as well as vote in the 2018-2019 Executive Board.

The proposed board for next year is:
•President  - Brenna Hughes
•VP (Fundraising) – Kelly Kohen
•VP (Communications) – Sophie Javers
•Treasurer – Camille Stephenson
•Secretary – Jennifer Roach
•Historian – Kristen Gong
•Auditor – Renee Hoch
•Parliamentarian – Bobbi Avery

If you are interested in or curious to learn more about these board positions, please do reach out to me!

As always, reach out to me at sophiejavers(at)gmail.com if you have any comments, ideas, concerns. My (email) door is always open.
Have a wonderful week!
Sophie Javers, PTA President, mom to boys  - Cullen (5th grade) and Cormac (1st grade)

FOCUS ON FITNESS

May Is Bike Month! Please mark your calendars, sign up to help, and turn in your child's permission slip to participate in our fun events...

We at NDE celebrate our strong cycling culture by biking to school as often as possible in May.  We give out prizes to the kids who scan in with our Active4Me program, and run several amazingly fun school-wide biking activities after school on Wednesdays in May.  Check out the details below!

We need volunteers to help make these fun events happen.  Please sign up to help at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040d44afad23aa8-mayisbike1
Your child will need to turn in a completed permission slip to participate in the after school activities.  Please fill one out and turn it in to the envelope hanging in the office before May 9. Download the form here, on the PTA website ndepta.com, or pick one up in the office: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzGN5JLDOqBSRDRRT2Y4bkstSDQ

Mark your calendars! This year's fun cycling events include:
  1. Wed. May 9th: National Bike to School Day Bike Rodeo All students who bike to school in the morning will be entered into a raffle for several cool prizes, and will receive a treat!  After school, our blacktop will be transformed into a Bike Rodeo.  There will be fun stations set up that teach kids about all aspects of cycling safety, from helmet and tire pressure safety, to hand signaling, to navigating challenging bike courses.  Fun for all ages!  Your child must know how to ride a bike and have a helmet to participate.  There will be several community bikes available to use for those who don't own a bike. A permission slip must be turned in prior to this event.  This event runs from 1:30-2:40pm.
  2. Wed. May 23rd: Most Decorated Bike Contest Students can enter the Most Decorated Bike Contest after school.  They are encouraged to decorate their bikes at home the day before.  A few decorations will be available for use before school that morning. Mrs. Roseen will be our judge!
  3. Wed May 30th: Teacher Bike Race and Popsicle Sale  A beloved tradition at NDE!  A teacher from each grade will participate in the highly competitive Teacher Bike Race.  Students are encouraged to stay after school to cheer on their favorite teacher!  The PTA will hold a popsicle sale before the bike race. Popsicles are $1.  The money raised from the popsicle sale will go into our Active4Me Scanning fund.
  • Sign up your children to participate in our Active4Me Scanning program!  Once signed up, they can scan in at the lunch tables each morning that they walk or bike to school. When they scan, you will receive a text or email alerting you that they arrived to school safely, and they will receive many fun incentives for staying active and participating.  This program not only incentivizes fitness and doing our part to be green, it decreases traffic around our school!  In the month of May, every scan really counts.  The class in each grade that scans the most times throughout the month will receive an ice-cream party!  So, the more people scanning in each class, the better the chances of winning. Extra incentive: raffle tickets will be awarded to every student who scans on each Wed morning in May.  There will be some really cool cycling-related prizes available! Visit the lunch tables in the mornings to enroll, grab a permission slip in the office, or sign up here: https://northdavis.active4.me

If you have any questions about the May Is Bike Month Activities or the Active4Me scanning program, please contact Michelle Livingston at mchellelivingston@gmail.com, or visit her at the lunch tables on Thursday mornings before school.  Happy Cycling!!

As the year comes to an end, please take a few minutes to give your feedback on PTA activities and program support.

Let your voice be heard!

The PTA is asking for your feedback and ideas on all of our PTA activities, as well as how we can expand/diversify fundraising efforts to continue our programming at North Davis Elementary. It is essential to constantly reassess the priorities and needs of our NDE community and this survey is an important way for the PTA to collect your thoughts!

Please do take a moment to respond to this survey. It will take 5 minutes or less of your time, but your input will be lasting, as it helps guide the PTA in planning and programing for the rest of this year and the next.

Click here to access the survey and share your ideas.

PARTY TIME!

There are still a few spaces available at several upcoming parent-hosted and teacher-hosted parties.  These gatherings are so much fun, and such a great way to meet new friends. So jump on this chance to connect with your NDE community, while supporting our school. You can sign up to attend any of these at ndepta.com.  Click on the "Shop the Auction" button, and join the fun!

If you haven't yet, there's still time to sign up for our Active4Me Scanning Program!
Please consider signing up your children for our Active4Me bike scanning program.  Each time your children walk or bike to school, they will be scanned in by our friendly volunteers.  You may have seen them scanning kids in at the lunch tables in the morning!  The scan will send a text message or email to you,
to let you know that your children arrived to school safely, and will tally how many times they've walked or biked, plus the cumulative miles they've logged for the school year.  Incentives and prizes are given out throughout the year to encourage the kids to keep scanning.

Do you live too far away for your children to bike to school?  With the earlier start time at Davis High School, traffic is pretty heavy on 14th St.  Please consider dropping your children off on F St, at the end of 14th, or at the Davis Arts Center, and having them walk to school from there.  This still qualifies for bike scanning!

Stop by the lunch tables in the morning between 8-8:30, or in the office to pick up an Active4Me permission slip.  You can also download the form on the North Davis Elementary School website and drop it off in the office once you've completed it.  Find more information here: https://northdavis.active4.me
