BAHAMAS MARINE MAMMAL RESEARCH ORGANISATION

E-NEWS Spring 2018

Dear friends and supporters of BMMRO,

Thanks to many volunteers and especially Albert Shephard, the re-articulation project of the false killer whale 'Ducky', is nearing completion and due to be hung from the roof of the Kenyon Research Centre at Friends of the Environment in the fall. We completed a second survey on the r/v Garvin with Field School and successfully retrieved both our acoustic arrays that have been recording ship noise and whale presence as part of our "Shared Waters" project. An outcome from the first survey was our interns from the University of the Bahamas winning the best student presentation about this project, check out their great video. We have had encounters during this period with dolphins, beaked whales, sperm whales, and melon-headed whales, even showing some lovely ambergris merchants their first ever sperm whales. BMMRO were also co-authors on a new paper out on dwarf sperm whale vocalisations. We have given our support to the Bahamian governments' Ministry of the Environment to ban single use plastics and styrofoam by 2020 and also had our own research centre transferred to solar power! Finally, if you are or know a young Bahamian interested in marine biology please ask for an application for this summer's Whale Camp!

'Ducky'. Special thanks to Albert, Helen, Jeff and all the staff and volunteers from Friends of the Environment.
