Tour of Third Day

Farms

Fran Hummel has arranged a fabulous tour of Third Day Farms, a small family run operation located at 242 Temple Road, Ridgeville, SC, on Thursday, June 14th, at 10:00 A.M.

Third Day Farms is owned and operated by Michael Nobles and his family, who grow edibles and other plants for companies who then supply large retail outlets.

This year they are launching their new patented Dwarf Pomegranate. Also, their patented "Little Miss Figgy” will go into the Southern Living line this Spring! They have a lot of interesting plants in production both in containers and in the orchards, all of which promise to be of interest!

If you plan to attend, please e-mail Fran Hummel, mfranhum@yahoo.com

***Please wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes as this is a walking tour on a working farm where there is a lot of farm equipment, as well as contoured beds for drainage. Any areas that are of concern or that are off limits will be clearly marked.

In light of this, everyone will be asked to sign a liability waiver prior to the tour in order to protect the owners since they are not set up for traditional tours, but are allowing us this unique and special opportunity to learn about their farm and the interesting crops they grow.  A list of some of their crops/plants is attached.

Directions to the farm are below:
Take  Hwy 61 to Givhans, go past the Fire Department and turn right on Temple Road which is the first paved road to the right after you pass the Fire Department.  Just past the cemetery, you will see a set of black gates on the left, which is the entrance into the farm. There is also a large Silo in the field where you turn into the gates.  There is no sign since they are not open to the public.

Articles for the Taproot

Magazine Needed

Due Date is July 25th

The Taproot Magazine is a great opportunity for Master Gardeners to learn more about an area of gardening or horticulture that really interests them.  Pick a topic, research it if needed, and write a short article or do a photographic essay to share your knowledge with other Master Gardeners.   Some ideas to consider: gardening passions, a favorite plant, something new you have learned recently, an interesting gardening question from the MG office, problems with bugs and diseases, a gardening outing, a class, a book, your own garden or a garden you love.   ALL IDEAS ARE WELCOME.

Please contact Robyn Bradley at 843-693-8719 or tcmgataproot@gmail.com or nzkiwi@comcast.net with your questions or thoughts or just go ahead and start writing.  The deadline for submissions to the next Quarterly is July 25th.

Volunteer Opportunities In Our Community

Kiosk at Magnolia

Plantation

The Kiosk at Magnolia Plantation is a great venue for Master Gardeners to interact with the public, answer questions, and collect soil samples.  Many visitors stop by our "Ask a Master Gardener" table at Magnolia, which is located in front of the gift shop under the main house, and we need your help.

Volunteers are needed Thursday through Sunday, 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM & 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Lynne McCallum-Talerico, magnoliakiosk@gmail.com to volunteer.

 Summerville

Farmers Market

The Summerville Farmers Market is up and running with more than 60 vendors.  Last year the AAMG table had more than 800 contacts between mid-April and Labor Day.  We need your help staffing the table.

The market is located a 200 South Main with free parking in the adjacent parking garage and is open every Saturday from 8:30 to 12:30.  Check out this summer's calendar and pick out a Saturday that works for you.

 Mount Pleasant Market

The Mt. Pleasant Farmers Market runs from 3:30 PM until 7:00 PM every Tuesday at the Moultrie Middle School.

The Tri-county Master Gardeners will continue to host a AAMG table at the Market as they have done for many years.
Please contact Stephanie McCants at stephanietmccants@gmail.com if you are able to help.

Johns Island Market

The Johns Island Market, open year-around, has become increasingly busy with more and more visitors coming to the Master Gardener table with their gardening questions and soil samples, which means that we need lots of volunteers to help staff this market table.

The market is located at Charleston Collegiate School, 2024 Academy Road, Johns Island, SC 29455 and is open every Saturday from  9:30 - 1:30.  If you would like to learn more about the Johns Island market and see the other participating vendors, please visit their website at www.johnsislandfarmersmarket.com .

We need your help in order to continue to staff this market.  If you are willing to volunteer, please contact George Aaron, Market Coordinator, at gwaaronpt@earthlink.net or call him at 843-793-1778.
