BUSINESS

  • In the third-biggest transaction in the Swiss food giant's 152-year history, Nestle has paid $7.15 billion to Starbucks for the rights to sell the coffee chain's products around the world. The partnership will reinforce Nestle's position as the world's biggest coffee company at a time when industry consolidation has picked up and consumer tastes continue to evolve in the fast-changing market. Starbucks will primarily use the proceeds to give raises to the thousands of coffee farmers and baristas — wait, no, they're accelerating share buybacks. Reuters

SPORTS

  • [Horse Racing] The odds-on favorite, Justify, took down the 144th running of the Kentucky Derby, breaking a 136-year-old curse that had prevented a horse from winning the event without racing at the age of 2. Finishing the wettest Derby on record in two minutes and four seconds, Justify began racing in February and gave trainer Bob Baffert his fifth Derby win. Only Ben Jones has more wins with six.

The second leg of the Triple Crown will take place on May 19 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. TIME
