TWO Clients to get a Second Chance
Mark Bartlett and SCP board member Rachel Herd, from Davis Wright Tremaine, have been representing Robbie Burton in a clemency case for almost two years.
Mr. Burton got a 3-1 vote in recommendation for clemency back in September, 2017.

Robbie is a sixty-two-year old man who has served twenty-three years in prison on a three strikes case. Because of his extraordinary personal transformation in prison and Rachel's and Mark’s advocacy, the Board agreed that he deserved a second chance.
SCP board member Jennifer Horwitz won a unanimous vote for recommending clemency for her client Dwight Griffin back in December, 2017.

Mr. Griffin is a sixty-four-year-old man who struck out on drug-related robbery charges. He has served twenty-three years of his life sentence. His display of sincere remorse, dedication to sobriety and his family, as well as Jennifer's advocacy persuaded the Board that he deserved a second chance.
And in April, we learned that the Governor agrees.

Governor Inslee called to let Mark, Rachel and Jennifer know that he will be signing off on Mr. Burton's and Mr. Griffin's petitions, commuting their life sentences. Congratulations to all those involved in the huge wins!
More Happy News!
SCP Board Member Paul Heer won a Pro Bono Attorney of the Year Award from his firm, Foster Pepper PLLC!

Paul is being recognized for the dedication to accesible and merciful justice that he has demonstrated through his positions in both Foster Pepper Clemency Team and the Seattle Clemency Project.

Congratulations, Paul, for the well deserved recognition!

Hearing for a Possible Retrial

On April 26th, SCP Board President Jon Zulauf had the chance to go before Superior Court Judge Veronica Alicea Galván and speak on behalf of his client Arthur Aiken. Mr. Aiken is petitioning for a new trial for a murder he was convicted of over fifty years ago but did not commit.
Spring Happy Hour

Last night, SCP held its Spring Happy Hour Fundraiser. We were thrilled to have Nikki Lohman from the Pioneer Human Services and our very own Rachel Herd with Davis Wright Tremaine speak on their experiences and thoughts on second chances. It was a lovely evening of sharing stories that inspire us to do what we do.

Thank you so much to all those that attended. We sincerely appreciate your interest and support.

Last but not least, a huge thank you to all those who donated during the #GiveBig campaign!

Your support is crucial to our work. Everyday, the SCP team is working hard to help reformed, deserving prisoners get a second chance and access to legal representation.

Thank you to all our volunteers and donors!
You make all the difference!
