Take yourself back to March 2018. We'd seen leaps and bounds in the department of equality in respect to marriage - but where did we stand with our housing? ACTCOSS crunched the numbers from that very date to tell the severity of the housing stress in the ACT in a factsheet released this June.
A snapshot from that very date, compiled by ACTCOSS this June, tells of the severity of our current housing stress.
- Out of 1,176 properties on the market that day (including Queanbeyan area) less than 3.5% (41 properties) could be classed as sustainable for low income renters.
- On average, renters holding out for standard public housing wait nearly 3 years (972 days) for accommodation.
- The few who were deemed priority - 1.5% of total applicants - still calculated an average 346 days in limbo.
The report also expounds that 7,000 Canberra renters are experiencing housing stress - the #1 reason why people are at risk of, or currently experiencing, homelessness in the ACT.
