Miksang Institute Newsletter
Volume 33:  May 2018

Hello Friends of the Miksang Institute

We have four updates for you this month:

  • June Workshop in Colorado
  • Miksang Workshop in Kyoto, Japan
  • Meet Miksang Teachers John Einarsen and Mitsue Nagase
  • New Video Excerpt: "Miksang Photography is Not Work"

FORM, SPACE AND MOMENTS: FURTHER DIMENSIONS OF PERCEPTION

In Form, Space and Moments: Further Dimensions of Perception, we introduce an aspect of perception that will fundamentally change how we see the world.

We are no longer fixed on the “thing”, the focal point of whatever we see, the lynchpin that tethers us to the world of form. Space gives breath, it brings room to breathe and accommodates whatever is or is not happening within it. In the first part, we will explore the simplicity of Form in Space as well as perceiving and photographing Space itself as subject matter.

The second part of this course is “Moments in Space”. As our awareness relaxes and opens out and we perceive our environment, we can tune into moments of transitory appearance. With the ability to rest our minds in space and see whatever arises, we can express these moments as they occur.

THE WORKSHOP HAS BEEN CONFIRMED AND THERE ARE 3 SPACES AVAILABLE.

Friday, June 15 - Wednesday, June 20

MAKING CONTACT WORKSHOP IN KYOTO JAPAN

We are happy to announce our first Miksang workshop in Kyoto, this summer. Over two weekends—July 13 (orientation), and 14–15 and 21–22—we will engage our mind and eye to make contact with the world as it is and experience what it means to truly “see.” The workshop will be held at the International Community House in the eastern hills of Kyoto. It will present an opportunity for opening your “good eye” here in the beautiful ancient capital of Japan. If you are interested, we are happy to send details and answer any of your questions. We look forward to meeting you.

MEET CERTIFIED MIKSANG INSTRUCTOR JOHN EINARSEN

“I live in Kyoto Japan where I teach and edit a magazine, Kyoto Journal. My first encounter with a Miksang image was a year or so after I had helped curate an exhibition on Peace Photography in Yokohama, Japan. I was struck by how peaceful, real and still the Miksang image was. It manifested a peace that I could feel and I thought to myself that this was true Peace Photography. And so I had to find out what this was all about. Fortunately, I was able to study with the Miksang Institute  several times over the past few years. My journey with this way of seeing continues to this day.

Through the guidance of Michael Wood and Julie DuBose I learned to see all over again from square one, to come to the world with fresh eyes and a calm mind. When we return to fundamental aspects of visual perception we are able to see anew. At the same time we begin to cultivate an open and still mind, and turn our awareness outward. Then we begin to see.

Such seeing is now with me every day and encountering a fresh perception that “holds” me brings such joy. I want to share this with others.”

I am available to teach in Japan and Asia with Mitsue Nagase

MEET CERTIFIED MIKSANG INSTRUCTOR MITSUE NAGASE

To me, Miksang is a great way to keep a contemplative practice alive in your life and to explore the world through photography. While one can’t be fully free from his/her own way of interpreting reality, it is possible to be aware of the mind constantly try to “make sense”, and to be more open for a direct experience of the moment. A photograph taken with such an intention speaks for itself, and is a pure reflection of the photographer’s eye, mind and heart.

In Miksang, the emphasis is on how to be receptive and meet this fleeting world without your ideas and labels.  When it happens, the joy and ease of simply being emerges. I am grateful that I have met this path, and happy to share what I had learned with anyone who is interested.

Mitsue Nagase resides in Japan and the US.
