Join the conversation, break down barriers. Because #KidsCantWait. From May 7 to 13, Ontario marks Children’s Mental Health Week, a time to collectively rally awareness on youth mental health, decrease stigma, and bring available services and help to the forefront.
According to the Children’s Mental Health Ontario (CMHO) website, as many as one in five children and youth in Ontario will experience some form of mental health problem. Five out of six of those kids will not receive the treatment they need.

“Solving a problem begins with recognizing the problem, and while we have come a long way in public awareness of children’s mental health, we still have a way to go,” says Tony Diniz, CEO of Child Development Institute.
Recently, Minister of Children and Youth Services Michael Coteau announced that Ontario is investing in six new youth wellness hubs to help more youth access the mental health and addictions services they need. According to CMHO, one in four people will be challenged by their mental health, with 70 per cent of mental health problems emerging in childhood or adolescence.
In support of Children’s Mental Health Week, CDI encourages staff and volunteers to wear their green “Child & Youth Mental Health Matters” pins, and take the opportunity to talk about this critical topic with friends to spread the message. If you post on social media, please join the discussion on Twitter and Facebook using the hashtag #KidsCantWait.
“Awareness is just the beginning. Timely access to a well-supported children’s mental health system is a must,” says Diniz.
