A Special Thank You - to Marjorie Thatcher and Phil Fertey for sharing their wisdom on Wednesday evening at our Community Forum. Many of us are still talking about and reflecting upon the pearls we took away that night. Thank you as well, to Mary Henley for so graciously holding space for the conversation to take place. And finally, thank you to the 50+ community members who took time out on a busy weeknight for mutual enrichment.

New Moon Social - The early-bird deadline for tickets to the New Moon Social is this Sunday! Our event team is working hard to make sure that this community connection fundraiser will be a fantastic evening out. Catering has been generously donated by Bill and Alison McCaig, owners of Nicli Antica and ECC parents. Our wonderful beverage sponsor is Deep Cove Brewers and Distillers. Entertainment will be great: two local talents, Mark Fortin and Mark Woodyard, plus a light-hearted live auction featuring exciting items donated by our community, like weekend getaways and photography packages. You'll also be delighted by a silent auction featuring goodies from our robust community and bustling neighbourhood. You can also expect a few fun surprises that reflect our creativity and spirit of revelry. Please be in touch with Mary in Development if you'd like to learn more about the event or get involved in bringing it to life. And remember to mark your calendar for June 13th and get your tickets here by Sunday: www.bit.ly/newmoonsocial

Honey Bees

This week, while observing the hive, we were most surprised to find the development of three unoccupied Queen Cups and a full bar of male drone cells (the raised comb pictured above). Queen cells on a hive so newly established are quite unusual; we can only guess as to why the bees were thinking it was time to develop a new queen. A new queen would result in swarming and potentially the loss of half our hive!
Our theory is that they were feeling crowded and experiencing a false abundance of food (because of the honey-tea we have been supplying them with over the past few weeks). As a result, we inserted additional topbars and removed the tea feeder. Then, after deliberation chose that it was in the best interest of the school and the new colony to remove the Queen Cups and observe over the coming weeks to see if they build more.
Thank you to Jason Yates for guiding these thoughtful conversations and to Ben Garratt for photographing the experience.

Many blessings
Laura Bergstrome
