The Scoop on Begonias

We are often asked many questions this time of year about the many different kinds of begonias we grow.  We grow over 40,000 begonias in the spring and it can often be overwhelming to choose the one you want.  A few of the best qualities about begonias are their low maintenance, durability, and drought tolerance.  To help break it down, all of our begonias fall into one of seven different varieties:

Illumination Begonias
These begonias are our most popular choice for hanging baskets and color bowls.  They have large flowers that require no deadheading, and a cascading growth habit which makes them an ideal choice for low maintenance containers.  Although they really don’t like much, if any sun, they are quite tolerant of the extreme summer heat.

California Sunlight Begonias
This type of begonia has a very dense and aggressive growth habit.  It is best suited in a larger container or basket.  When given the space, this begonia can be quite stunning in large hanging baskets.

Non-stop Begonias
Non-stops are a classic begonia that have been around for years.  They are often used in patio pots and flowerbeds, with a more upright growth habit.  Like the Illuminations, they require full to partial shade and can tolerate the heat.  They come in a large assortment of colors, with either green or dark bronze foliage and a large rose type bud.

Fibrous Begonias
They are best known as a pony-pack begonia, widely used in landscape beds.  They’re incredibly versatile and can handle anything from full shade to full sun.  Fibrous begonias are an excellent choice for a landscape bed that gets shade all day, then full hot sun in the afternoon.

Dragonwing Begonias
Dragonwings are one of my absolute favorite begonias.  It often goes unnoticed in the greenhouse when it’s small and in its pot; however once planted in the landscape bed or container you can really see how phenomenal it becomes.  They grow 12” to 15” tall and wide, with an arching growth habit.  They’re foliage is a beautiful, glossy green or bronze, with prolific large blooms.

Whopper Begonias
Whopper Begonias are true to their name.  They can grow up to 34” tall and 22” wide.  When planted in a mass planting in a landscape they are true showstoppers.  They can tolerate a decent amount of sun, but would prefer partial shade.

Gryphon Begonias
Gryphon begonias are often referred to as being a very dramatic and tropical foliage plant.  Their very large leaves are beautifully variegated green and silver.  They are also one of the top pics for indoor use as well as outdoor.
