Google demonstrated some amazing (and terrifying?) technology at its I/O conference, particularly the calling capabilities of Google Assistant. Using a technology called Google Duplux, Assistant is able to make scheduling or appointment calls on your behalf that are so convincingly human that the person on the other end has no idea they're chatting with a digital helper. In one of the largest U.S. technology acquisitions this year, Glassdoor has been acquired for $1.2 billion by Recruit Holdings, a Japanese human resources company that also owns Indeed. The ten-year old job hunting service best known for its user-provided reviews had raised just over $200 million from investors at a valuation of around $1 billion. TechCrunch

As expected, President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the landmark accord with Iran that had lifted sanctions in exchange for limits on the country's nuclear program. Much can be said about how the abandonment of the agreement threatens to distance the U.S. from its allies, gives political ammunition to Iranian hardliners over reformists, jeopardizes the possibility of a deal with North Korea, and detrimentally impacts businesses such as Boeing and GE, but I keep thinking about how much easier it is to destroy than to create. Whether you're talking about politics, building a business, or pretty much anything in life, it's important to remember that hard things are hard. CIA director nominee Gina Haspel appears before the Senate today in a tough confirmation hearing that is expected to touch on her role in the controversial interrogation programs after Sept. 11. She's the first woman to be nominated for the position, having spent more than three decades working undercover for the CIA before emerging last year to become the agency's deputy director. Reuters

Washington Republicans breathed a sigh of relief after Don Blankenship, who served time in prison after 29 people died in one of his mines, failed to win the Republican Senate primary in West Virginia. Across the board, for both Republicans and Democrats, yesterday's primary results in four states showed relative calm, though angst over Washington peeked through as Rep. Robert Pittenger in North Carolina's 9th Congressional District became the first sitting congressional representative this year to lose a primary challenge. NPR
