I celebrated my 70th birthday on Saturday and to say I was spoilt is an understatement. People came from as far afield as the UK, the USA and all over the RSA. There was much laughter, warmth and happiness in the room and I was made to feel very special indeed. So much so that the “glow” carried over to the next day and has not entirely dissipated. It was good to see so many hunters having a good time together, including seven who I have taught myself. Among them my newly married Godson, Tyghe Carstens – who successfully hunted a springbok with me on foot and killed it with his first shot at the age of six - and his beautiful bride, Angie, who interrupted their honeymoon to be there.
While it is not true that age is just a number and only relevant if you are a cheese, there are definitely advantages that come with advancing years. As I said in my short speech, there are certain things that only age teaches you, for example, not to take a laxative and a sleeping pill on the same night. That sex is not the answer. Sex is the question. Yes, is the answer. That there is enough gun control. What we need is more idiot control. That worrying really works because 90% of the things I have worried about have never happened. That good health is merely the slowest possible way to die. And that the good Lord gave us men a brain and a penis but only sufficient blood supply to use one at a time!
Like all things, if you want to be good at old age, you need to start young!
Kind Regards
