The CBCA NSW Branch Inc 2018 Aspiring Writers Mentorship Program is currently receiving manuscripts!

This program aims at fostering the talent of aspiring writers of children's literature across Australia and is open to all Australian citizens residing in Australia. CBCA NSW Branch Inc President, Gail Erskine, thanks HarperCollins Children’s Books for their continuing sponsorship of this program.

The 2018 winner will receive the Charlotte Waring Barton Award, named in honour of Charlotte Waring Barton (1797–1867), the author of Australia’s earliest known children’s book.

The extensive mentorship program from HarperCollins Children’s Books involves two - three-hour guidance sessions with a published HarperCollins author, as well as an additional three hours with HarperCollins staff, including a publisher, an editor and a marketing communications manager.

• The CBCA NSW Branch Inc has been holding the Aspiring Writers Mentorship Program (previously known as the Frustrated Writers Mentorship Program) since 1996. Some winners and runners up who have gone on to be published include, Michelle Cooper, J.C Burke, Jacqueline Harvey, Aleesah Darlison, Oliver Phommavanh, Nathan Luff and recently Helen Chebatte and Helen Thurloe.

 

• The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) is a not-for-profit, volunteer-run organisation that

aims to engage the community with literature for young Australians. The CBCA presents annual

awards to books of literary merit, for outstanding contribution to Australian children’s literature.

• Established in 1945, the Children’s Book Council of Australia was founded at a time when Australian

children’s books were few, and Australian authors and illustrators were virtually unknown. In 1946

the CBCA established annual book awards to promote books of high literary and artistic quality.

These awards are now the most influential and highly respected in Australia.

• The Charlotte Waring Barton Award is named in honour of Charlotte Waring Barton (1797–1867),

the author of Australia’s earliest known children’s book. The book is titled A Mother’s Offering to

Her Children: By a Lady, Long Resident in New South Wales. It was published anonymously in 1841

by the Gazette Office in Sydney. The identity of the authorship was discovered in 1980 by Marcie

Muir.
