April 2018

Fox attacks, more chicks & hatching eggs, breaking ground and still waiting on baby!

The Thursday Market

Shepherdstown's newest farmers market starts this Thursday. We're still waiting on baby #3 to make an appearance (our babies don't seem to care about "due dates"), so we may miss the first week. Peter will try to be there, but we'll see you there as soon as we're up for it if we can't make this week.

There will be many other wonderful local farmers and vendors with organic and sustainably produced goods!

Breaking Ground

This month we finally broke ground on our house, and we moved the main poultry yard further from the construction area. Though I knew the animals were enriching the soil, I'm still amazed every time I look at the difference in the rich, brown earth where the animals were compared to the clay everywhere else.

While the excavator was there we asked to have the top few inches of the chicken yard scraped into a compost pile. Within a day it was hot in the middle, and when we turned it we found all kinds of life, from worms to mushrooms, busy breaking everything down.

More Hatching Eggs & Chicks on the Way

Early in the month, we witnessed a spectacular fox attack (a hungry mama darted out of the woods and grabbed a Gretchen, a blue feathered Ameraucana hen, who was trying to fly away and about 4 feet up in the air. The fox ignored the barking dogs and the crazy pregnant lady running and screaming at her.) After that, we counted everyone and realized this was the third animal that had been taken in less than a week, and that the fox was alternating between us and a neighbor.

We used the opportunity to change our routine, and split most of our chickens into breeding groups in pastured poultry pens that we move 1-3 times per day, rather than allowing them to completely free range.

Since they're split up by breed now, we are starting to have more breeds of hatching eggs available for purchase. Next week, we will also have Cream Legbar chicks and Welsh Harlequin ducklings available.
