How to Avoid Common HR Mistakes - Part 1 Hiring

Effective Human Resources Management can be complicated. Complying with various federal, state, and local laws and regulations, having to manage the differences of individuals, and finding best practices that work for your business make HR a complex and challenging function in every business regardless of size, industry, or state. Understanding some of the mistakes to avoid can save you time and trouble later.

Common Mistakes during the Hiring Process:

Looking for applicants in the wrong places:  There are numerous places where applicants can post resumes and employers can search for qualified applicants to fill open positions. Knowing where an applicant who best fits your position would post a resume or look for a job listing can save you time and money by allowing you to concentrate on the most effective resources.

Only hiring the “same” employee:  Diversity is important for every business. Hiring employees from the same demographic group restricts the potential for improvement and growth by not incorporating people with different backgrounds and experiences who may have alternative ways to solve the same problems.

Eliminating potential applicants for unlawful reasons: Related to the above, it is against the law to discriminate against a protected group of people.  While state and local laws may cover additional classes, no employer may refuse to hire someone solely based on their gender, sex, age, religion, race, color, national original, disability, veteran status, or genetic information.

Asking improper questions on the application and in the job interview:
  • Asking questions on the application or in the interview that could elicit a response that provides information that would define the applicant as falling into one of the protected groups could create exposure if the information is not job-related.
  • Many cities, counties, and states have adopted “ban-the-box” laws which prohibit companies from asking applicants about their criminal history until later in the process, sometimes as late as after a conditional offer of employment has been made.
Hiring without doing background checks:  Employees have access to company, as well as to client, information and property.  Taking the time to run relevant background checks such as criminal history or reference checks helps to make sure you know who you are hiring.
