A chilly start didn't deter nearly 200 people turning up at Waitangi Regional Park on Saturday 26 May to get 4,200 plants in the ground in record time!.
It was a happy morning at Waitangi, despite the weather.  Last Saturday was the first community planting day in the winter calendar for Hawke's Bay Regional Council. In conjunction with The Great Give who did a wonderful job promoting this event.  If you would like to join in then check out our website and register your interest.  We are also getting pretty good at turning out a sausage on the bbq to finish off the morning, so please come along.

The Youth Environment Council has been busy doing radio interviews on Radio Kidnappers within the last month and more are planned.  They are also excited to be promoting a Waste Audit Day with schools on Monday 11 June.

Finally a reminder about burning dry firewood for the best results in helping to keep our town air pollution at bay. Regional Council has an educational resource available to download and this is just one of the important messages we share.

Enjoy this Step Out update and don't hesitate to send in a story with a pic to share with others.
Nga mihi nui Sally.
This resource is available to download from the HBRC website.  We can also provide a hard copy booklet on request. There are four chapters with a range of activities in each one  - States of Matter, Atmospheric Layers, The Inversion Layer and Photosynthesis. It is designed for students in years 4 to 8.

QUICK FACT:

Never burn driftwood from the coast or chemically treated timber on an indoor fire.  Burning these releases chemicals that can make you very sick!

Youth Environment Council

They are getting their social action on - check out the Facebook page and instragram hbenvironmentalcouncil #EnvironmentalAwareness#HawkesBay.  Coming up on Monday 11 June - Waste Audit Day

Talking on Radio Kidnappers has also just happened for a few of the members and you can listen to the recording undertaken earlier this month.
On the left above is Jake, our YEC facilitator, Rhian and Tharusha, and with Carolyne on the right.

They have an opportunity to continue with further sessions on environmental topics important to them over the coming months.

Recently the YEC had a combined meeting with the Hastings Youth Council.  It was held at The National Aquarium of New Zealand. A great way to share ideas and upcoming events.

Enviroschools

Enviroschools Hawke's Bay recently ran two workshops. The first, Exploring Enviroschools was designed for teachers and principals new to the programme.  We had teaching staff from schools and kindergartens from CHB, Napier and Hastings.  It was great to provide an insight into the fundamentals of being an Enviroschool. An opportunity to share experiences and meet new people.
Our regions three facilitators all took part and lead a session during the four hour session.
Sarah Hope and Murray Gosling from Hastings Intermediate creating their awa.
The second workshop was an Holistic Reflection workshop, held at Eskdale School earlier this month.  Lead by Sandy Bell-Jameson who is the Programme Development Coordinator, for the national Enviroschools team. It was an action-packed afternoon that provided a good platform of understanding, for those who attended, on what Holistic Reflection is all about.

Special thanks goes to Toimata Foundation, the Enviroschools national hub.  Without funding support from them we would not be able to run these workshops.

Genevieve Bennett - Project Manager, Hawke's Bay Biodiversity Action Plan

What do you do? I am the Project Manager for the delivery of the Hawke’s Bay’s Biodiversity Action Plan. The Plan has been developed from the Hawke’s Bay Biodiversity Strategy and takes these beautiful aspirational ideas and turns them into practical actions on the ground.

What led you to this role? I grew up on a sheep and beef farm in the Wairarapa where conservation ideals and practical farming went hand in hand. My grandfather was  a keen geologist and devoted weedbuster at the Fensham reserve near Carterton so weekends were spent helping on the farm, digging for fossils in the limestone hills or pulling Old Man’s Beard saplings at Fensham. I went on to study Environmental Studies and Geography at Massey University and woofed my way across seven farms in Europe as part of my Honors dissertation - research on motivations and experiences of organic farmers and their volunteers. More recently I spent seven years working for the QEII National Trust.

What’s the best part of your job? It has to be the people and the special natural places that they feel connected to. The biodiversity of the Hawke’s Bay region is incredible, diverse and unique and the people who live here are passionate about the outdoors and the natural environment.

Where we like

TimberNook is an innovative nature-based developmental programme for children, which provides ample time for children to explore their surroundings. It is based out at Maraekakaho, Hastings. It weaves a creative health and education curriculum based on the therapeutic aspects of nature to imagination, exploration and play.

TimberNook began in Australasia in 2015 when Wendy Pirie introduced it to Hawke's Bay.  Wendy is the Director of TimberNook Australasia, and co-author of Move, Play and Learn with Smart Steps.

They offer
holiday programmes, school and early childhood Creative Mind sessions, as well as professional development for adults.

WHY WILD EYES?
Wild Eyes is a free NZ-specific digital tool for parents and educators that can be used to inspire Kiwi kids to get offline, go outside and engage, explore and learn about Aotearoa's unique environment.  Check out this unique site.
Anna Madarasz-Smith and Shane Gilmer put 'Big Blue' through its paces.
The latest tool in our tool box. Hawke’s Bay Regional Council coastal and marine scientists are getting a clearer picture of what is going on deep down underwater on our coast – thanks to a new arrival.

‘Big Blue’ is a remote-operated vehicle (ROV) capable of diving down to 100 metres and filming the underwater environment. It will allow us to see what we can’t see from the land or the surface of the water. We can see what the seafloor is like and what algae and marine life exist down there.
