Engaging Across Divides

As The Many continues to grow, we welcome new members and new media partnerships

One of our Member Spotlights as featured on social media. Follow us on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter @Spaceship_Media!

In February, Spaceship Media launched The Many, a moderated, national cross-political-lines conversation. Since then, women from across the country and of all political affiliations have been talking steadily and respectfully about politics, current events and life. We’re continuing to grow the group to reflect the diverse perspectives and experiences of women across our country and are actively recruiting participants. If you are interested in joining the conversation or know someone who might be, learn more about the project (and sign up to be a part) here. We’re also open to additional media partners. If you and your organization are interested in collaborating, email us at spaceshipmedia@spaceshipmedia.org.

What We’re Learning from The Many

Alyxandria Sanford, lead moderator for The Many (and recent graduate of CUNY’s social journalism program), reflected on her work for the online community to a Tinder date recently.  “As much as I am a moderator of these conversations I, too, am being opened up to people with different thought processes than mine.” Read about it here

Friendships Forged in Gun Conversation

A month ago, in partnership with TIME, Advance Local and Essential Partners, we brought together 21 people from around the country to talk about guns. That in-person convening was followed by a month-long moderated conversation on Facebook that ends in early May. Two participants became friends from opposite sides of the gun debate. More about Guns, an American Conversation and the stories coming out of it here.

Public Insight Network Supports The Many

We’re so excited that Linda Miller and the Public Insight Network are doing exceptional work helping us circulate a callout for The Many. They’re helping us target specific audiences to ensure that we have a diverse set of participants in the project. We think it’s a great way to engage an audience and strengthen relationships with the communities that journalists serve.

Hacking it with Facebook!

Co-founders Eve Pearlman and Jeremy Hay were keynote presenters at Facebook’s F8 Hackathon in San Jose May 1 and 2. They spoke about Spaceship Media’s mission to reduce polarization, build communities and restore trust in media — and challenged the assembled developers to get creative and help support civil dialogue. Eve and Jeremy will also be in New York in mid-May speaking to news publishers about using Facebook groups for journalism.
