From the Executive Officer

In recent months, we at CivicRisk Mutual have dedicated time to responding to requests from councils interested in our Mutual as a preferred provider of risk and insurance support.  During this time it has given us pause to reflect on what our Mutual has achieved.  We can all be very proud of our organisation as we continue to thrive in a very competitive environment.

Apart from all the services we provide and the sharing of knowledge, it is interesting to note that the combined group of CivicRisk Mutual over the past 15 years has saved the councils collectively $71 million with $11 million being returned to councils over the past 10 years.  Our investment portfolio stands at $90 million and we are achieving 6% return on our money.  The investment returns now cover 30% of our total costs and if we reflect back to 2003, they were no more than 5%.  If you want to know what your council's share of this saving is, just refer to page 11 and 21 of the 2016/17 annual report (click here).

Well done everybody!

Orange City Council Joins CivicRisk Mutual

CivicRisk Mutual is pleased to welcome Orange City Council as our latest member.  CivicRisk Mutual was chosen as the preferred partner following a recent tender review.  The Orange City Council staff are impressed by our service model and are looking forward to working with our members.  At a recent meeting Michelle Catlin of Orange City Council commented that our submission was chosen as they were impressed with the collaborative philosophy of the Mutual, risk management support and transparent approach.  They look forward to sharing in all the benefits CivicRisk Mutual provides.

Lithgow City Council Partners with CivicRisk Mutual

Lithgow City Council has indicated a keen interest to join CivicRisk Mutual and has given notice to Statewide and commenced our due diligence review.

Lithgow Council can see advantages in building close ties with Western Sydney and joining CivicRisk Mutual for their risk and insurance services is a natural progression.  We will continue to work with Lithgow City Council with the view to bringing them on board as full members in July 2019.

South Australian Councils Consider Their Insurance Options

Our Executive Officer, Andrew Armitstead (pictured left), was asked to speak at a recent seminar in South Australia which was organised for councils to hear about alternatives for managing risk and insurance.  Andrew joined RMIA Executive Officer, Scott Ryrie (pictured right), and Willis Towers Watson Local Government Support, Josef Radinja, at the seminar and spoke of CivicRisk Mutual's history and successes.  The councils in South Australia were interested to investigate alternatives available to Local Government in the current insurance market.

Managing the Risks of External Cladding

CivicRisk Mutual recently held an informative session on the risks of external cladding.  In light of the tragic Grenfell Tower fire in the UK, there has been substantial focus on these building products.  CivicRisk Mutual held a seminar for our members and invited legal experts, insurers, claim representatives and State Government representatives to workshop with our planners and certifiers in an effort to better understand the risk and protect our members.  The seminar was well represented with over 60 attendees from our member councils and thanks to all our speakers and members for participating in such a successful event.

2018 Risk Management Excellence Awards

CivicRisk Mutual members' risk management achievements have played a major part in creating the financially strong, stable and innovative organisation that CivicRisk Mutual is today.  Our Risk Management Excellence Award program recognises those members that have demonstrated outstanding risk management leadership and results.

The Risk Management Excellence Award application process allows members to nominate themselves or others in their council.

This is your chance to win $2,000 and the recognition of the significant risk management effort to develop a project or program which has contributed to your organisation's risk management program.

Submissions close Friday, 10 August 2018 and the winners will be announced at the CivicRisk Mutual Forum Dinner on Thursday, 22 November 2018.

For entry guidelines and form, please contact this office on 1300 837 493.
