Just Around the Corner - May

With the end of the school year, this month marks some major changes in the lives of many of our young people. Significant life events - baptisms, weddings, funerals, ordinations - are surrounded by ritual within the church, and for good cause. Ritual as a daily practice offers our lives a sense of order and balance. Ritual as a spiritual practice reminds us, as we read this past Sunday, that it is God in whom “we live and move and have our being.” Ritual as a communal, religious practice grounds us in our faith community and illustrates for us the ‘great cloud of witnesses’ that surrounds us, goes before us, and continually lifts us up in love.

On Sunday, May 13, we will offer blessings through ritual to our young people who will be marking significant milestones on their life’s journey. Particularly, we are focusing on the young people who will be transitioning from one school to another, those completing their high school education and those who have completed graduate school.

Our young people being recognized include:

Aubrey Kearney - Graduating from Indiana University Bloomington -
Master's in Public Affairs with a concentration on Policy Analysis and Public Finance Administration
Bri Wagner - Graduating from University of Memphis  - Master's in Public Health
Ethan King - Tennessee Air National Guard; University of Memphis beginning fall of 2019.
Colin King - Begins 9th grade at White Station High School
Joseph Baker - Begins 9th grade (inaugural class) at Crosstown High School
Reghan Kearney - Begins 9th grade at White Station High School
Anna Rose Baker - Begins 6th grade at White Station Middle School
Owen Kearney - Begins 6th grade at White Station Middle School
Tiyana Warren - Begins 6th grade at White Station Middle School
Colin Kallaher - Begins 6th grade at White Station Middle School
Finn Murphy - Begins 6th grade at Lausanne Collegiate School

If there are any others with a close connection to Shady Grove that will be making an educational transition, we will be sure to include them in our blessings and celebrations! Please just let me know!

Let us keep these, and all of our, wonderful youth in prayer, thanking God for their presence in our faith community and for the touch of their lives upon ours.

Be Blessed and Be a Blessing,

Rev. Will

Session Notes
The session was pleased to formally accept Troy Gottier and Meegan Canny-Gottier into the membership of Shady Grove Presbyterian Church.  The family has been attending for several years and many of you have gotten to know Troy, Meegan, and their children.  Troy and Meegan will be introduced to the congregation on April 22, 2018.  Another blessed event on that date will be the baptism of their daughter, Kayleigh.

The session also approved the request of Steve Holdsworth to be baptized on April 22nd.  This will probably be Steve’s last opportunity to worship with Shady Grove as he will be moving to Seattle, Washington.  Please make a point of wishing him well.

Rev. Christians and the Worship Committee are considering incorporating a passing of a Welcome Pad into the worship service.  This would serve at least two purposes, it would make it easier for us to get to know the people seated next to us in worship and welcome any who might be visiting with us.  It would also allow us to sign up for special events like the Wednesday Night Suppers while the thought is fresh on our minds.

Rev. Will is on vacation May 21-28;  Rev. Dr. Courtney Pace will preach on Sunday, May 27.  He will also be away the following Sunday, June 3, for his grandfather's funeral.  Rev. Ruth Lovell-Bradham will preach that Sunday.

Please remember Shady Grove in your will.
