Dear Reader,

Between the bookcases are bedecked with our inaugural monthly art show; stop by and see the talent here in Hayward!

Our pillar prodigy will be holding court this Saturday, May 5th, from 2 to
4pm -- we’d love to have you for refreshments and repartee.

B Street will be the place to party all day long, as Cinco de Mayo will be celebrated from 10am to 5pm, with live music, dancers, and vendors -- the street will be closed from 6am to 7pm on May 5th.

I’ll let the artist verbalize her vision:
Ragnarök Illustration

My name is Madison Forseth, I run my art page called Ragnarök Illustration, and I’ve lived here in Hayward my whole life. Through the good times and the incredibly bad times, illustrating hasn’t failed to brighten my days. Over time I have tried many different mediums of visual art, and the satisfyingly crisp appearance of ink has made pen and paper my favorite medium.

With much of my art, I strive to elicit an atmospheric feeling of the unknown that seems like something not of this world. I’m inspired by Norse mythology, the H.P. Lovecraft mythos, "Berserk" (a masterfully made comic book series), and more. I love that gripping, electric feeling you get when you’re watching
well-made thriller (such as The Thing [1982], The Exorcist, The Shining, etc), that feeling of wonderful intrigue and excitement. So I try to create similar engaging emotions with my art. It absolutely makes my day whenever I see that people are enjoying what I’ve created.

One of my favorite things is getting feedback from people on my art. So if anyone has comments, questions, or criticism, I’d love it if you shot me a message @ragnarokillustration on Instagram, or email me at contentedstoic@gmail.com.

And then, above the cases, throughout the spring season…
Geir Jordahl: Circle of Life

Thirty years of traveling around the word has imbued Norwegian-born photographer and teacher Geir Jordahl with a firm belief that an essential aspect of his creative vision is rooted in travel–literally and figuratively. For Jordahl, exploring the imagination is a worthwhile journey. He investigates the specifics of place within the realm of imagination. In his photography, Jordahl examines his relationship to space and experience by interacting with its periphery through the use of panoramic vision.

In his Circle of Life series, Jordahl evokes a crystal ball-like atmosphere, creating magical and luminous images of Chinese landscapes. Fog-shrouded peaks, large vistas, and crisp details entice the viewer to pause and reflect. Through the use of hemispherical photography and an extreme wide-angle lens, Jordahl invites the viewer to embrace a different way of experiencing a photographic image.

In 1961, Jordahl immigrated with his family to the United States from Kristiansund, Norway. He completed his undergraduate degree from California State University, Hayward, in 1979 and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in photography from Ohio University. For nineteen years, Jordahl taught at Chabot College in Hayward, California. In 1983, he and his wife, fellow photographer Kate Jordahl, founded PhotoCentral, a nonprofit photographic educational facility in Hayward, California.

Jordahl has exhibited at Ansel Adams Gallery, Yosemite National Park, California; Museum of Modern Art, Tampere, Finland; Museum of Photography
,Brauschweig, Germany; and Kodak Gallery, Tokyo, Japan. Selected works are included in the permanent collections of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Paris, France; Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Santa Barbara, California; the University of Texas, Dallas; and Yosemite Museum, Yosemite, California. Jordahl lives and works in Hayward.
