FPDS Sixth Grade Class of 2012 Alumni Luncheon

The First Presbyterian Day School Sixth Grade Class of 2012 recently enjoyed a luncheon at the school to celebrate their upcoming high school graduation. These outstanding men and women came from several different area schools and participated in a quick game of platoon before heading back to class!

Four alumni were recognized for still holding the record for the most Accelerated Reader points ever accumulated at FPDS: Parker Gleason, Dalton Dear, Christopher Russell, and Mary Margaret Mitchell (highest at 1,502.6).

United States Congress’ Tax Cuts and Job Acts

Under a recent agreement reached between the U.S.House of Representatives and U.S. Senate, the typical family of four, earning $73,000 per year, will receive a $2,059 tax cut next year.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act nearly doubles the standard deduction to simplify taxes and make more of what you earn tax-free. It doubles the child tax credit to $2,000 per child and lowers tax rates across the board.

The final version of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will allow use of your 529 college savings for costs associated with enrollment or attendance at a public, private, or religious elementary or secondary school. No more than $10,000 during a tax year may be withdrawn for this purpose, without incurring any tax penalties. This limit applies to the beneficiary, or student, and not to the account. So, even if you have multiple accounts for your child, you will still be limited to $10,000 total in tax-free distributions made after December 31, 2017.

Jeans for Genes: Student Spotlight

The Fabulous Friends (Down Syndrome) class held a Jeans for Genes Day in March to recognize World Down Syndrome Day. The class raised more than $1,300 for the Central Mississippi Down Syndrome Society by asking the school for donations for the opportunity to wear jeans to school. Our Fabulous Friends led the school in the Pledge of Allegiance and prayer and participated in activities with their homerooms.

Sixth Grade Service Projects

First Presbyterian Day School sixth graders participated in two afternoons of community service. The girls visited the Mustard Seed, where they toured the facility, assisted with spring-cleaning, and played fun games with the Seedsters. The boys spent a recent afternoon at Mission First, the school’s 2017-2018 mission project. They also assisted with spring cleaning and planting.
