In our most recent newsletter that went out on May 1, 2018 - we included a picture of the second archway above and how it served as an inspiration piece for the archway that we plan to build as part of our Grand Entrance. We received an important piece of feedback that we would like to address to all of our friends and guests of Carolina Memorial Sanctuary.
It was pointed out to us that this photo looks like a Shinto Torri, and it absolutely does! Which was by no means, intentional on our part. Why we chose this photo was because of it's grandness, the beautiful use of wood logs, and we were attracted to some of its lines. What we failed to consider is it's connection to the Shinto religion.
Carolina Memorial Sanctuary is an all faiths projects. We have performed burials for people of many different faiths and belief systems and it is VERY IMPORTANT to us that EVERYONE feels welcome. Our intention all along was to build the archway in a craftsman style (first photo above), but we chose to use the second photo because of the afore mentioned features. And now in hindsight... that wasn't the best choice. And just to be clear, the archway will not look like the second archway above, except that it will be wooden and grand, and will look much more like the first archway.
We apologize to anyone who was concerned after seeing the photo we used and the prospect of having an archway that is identified with a specific religion. And thank you so much to the person who brought this to our attention - it's very helpful feedback!
