Humbly serving the steelhead stoke through seasons, soul, and paint!

Trout Season is here!

Hello friends,

It's May! And that means it's time for big bugs and trout! This year we will be offering trout trips on the Upper Rogue River. Over the last decade, the upper Rogue has been proving herself with good numbers of local trout who are eager to pounce on big Golden Stone and Salmon Flies. With minimal to little pressure as a trout fishery, the Rogue is sure to please anglers of all skill levels and abilities. While many rivers in Southern Oregon are great trout fisheries, few of them allow you the ability to make precise casts freely out of a boat towards active fish. Growing up in Montana, and cutting my teeth on immaculate trout streams, it's nice to feel a slice of childhood on our local fishery. Big dry flies and active eaters make for productive and memorable experiences. We are booking now and anticipate the start of the stonefly hatch in the next couple of weeks.

The hatch on the Rogue is around for a short season with the peak fishing happening between the end of May and first three weeks of June. With the Medford airport close by and the I-5 corridor adjacent to much of the river, it's an easy destination to reach. These rainbows and sea run cuts are aggressive and hungry this time of year. We fish both dry fly presentations and wet fly presentations sub-surface. And to shake things up a bit, we offer swung fly instruction to eager trout with Micro-Spey rods. A real art and gas when a fish crushes that sculpin pattern! Plus, early steelhead arrives in May and you have a real chance at getting a bright summer steelhead. Not a bad surprise when fishing for their cousins.

Please inquire here for more information. We'll have you fishing in no time! All gear and tackle are included in this all-inclusive trip. Come hone your firing skills and watch the piggy come home to the trough!

We recommend both 4wt and 5wt rods for casting dry flies and nymph style presentations. Also 3/4/5 wt micro-Spey rods for swinging flies.

Feel free to drop us a line and we will update you on the best conditions of fishing on Southern Oregon rivers.

Our Fall season for Summer- run steelhead also fills up fast so if you are one to plan ahead feel free to book early as our calendar is filling up quick!

A Big Thank You!

We want to take a moment to thank all of our guests who fished with us throughout the winter here in Southern Oregon. We made great friendships, shared incredible memories, and had an absolute blast sharing the river with all of our guests. So thank you for your patronage and we will see you in the Fall!

Also a big thank you to our sponsors and local fly shop for supporting us and for keeping all of us anglers in the game! Bob Meiser, you are an absolute fly rod wizard. You change anglers everytime we put your sticks in their hands. It's a real honor and pleasure to be working with such a talented artist and all-around good chap. Find your new best stick at:

Will Johnson and the Ashland Fly Shop Team, we love you guys! There is no better fly shop around when it comes to knowledge, gear selection, and above all service. No other fly shop greets you everytime you walk through the doors and makes you feel like you matter no matter who you are. You guys are the classiest! Go get some knowledge and probably a hug at:

And finally, we would like to thank Zack Williams and his crew at Swing The Fly Magazine for working with us and honoring us with a beautiful spread on our flies and artwork in the 2018 Volume 2 edition. Combining your passions can be a little challenging at times. In "A Muse at its Source" I talk about my challenges with balancing my passions to fish and guide, and how I can incorporate this energy towards the passion to push paint onto a canvas. Also, check out Kait's "Bailey's Bruiser" fly in the "Guide Fly" section of the magazine. An original pattern for her that has proven very effective time and time again on steelhead rivers throughout the PNW. Get your edition or subcription to the finest swing oriented magazine out there. And let's do everyone the favor of keeping our fish wet! Go here:

Humble Heron Happenings!

Spey baby is here! On March 17th, 2018 we welcomed our little Juniper Rogue Sampsel into the world. Or, who our friends refer her to as the "Spey Baby". We are overjoyed with this nugget and we look forward to
introducing her to you. Who knows maybe one day she'll even take you out on the boat!

Celebration of Oregon

James was recently invited to participate in a Celebration of Oregon. The show will explore the beauty and diversity of Oregon as revealed through art. Thanks to years of conservation and stewardship, these features are preserved for future generations to enjoy. The exhibit will be an appreciation for the beauties of Oregon and those who have protected it. The show will be held at OSU La Selles Stewart Gallery. For more information go to

Bear Creek Stewardship Cleanup

On earth day the family headed out to help out our beloved Rogue River. With the help of Stuart Warren, The Rogue River Keepers, and many other local volunteers and companies the Rogue's Bear Creek tributary, which is a major highway for our spawning anadromous fish, will be a little more delightful, clean, and garbage free. Many volunteers showed up to get dirty! Say goodbye invasive blackberries, plastics, and other man-made hazards, and lookout wild fish! Go make some babies! Visit to find out more about this recent cleanup and future events.
