Ngā mihi a koutou katoa te whānau whanui o te Kura Pokapu o Whakatu –

Greetings to friends and family of Nelson Central School.

A special welcome to Jo Cummings who has taken over the reins in Room one, with John teaching on Fridays. Jo is a real asset to our team and I know the students of Room 1 will make her very welcome. We also welcome Kate - who is helping us in classes every Monday this term. We appreciate the extra pair of hands!

We have new students in Room 1 - Simon and Joel, who have come from Switzerland for the term, also Raphael joins us (Room 12) and Noah (Room 13); and Emily and Claude have started in Renwick 2. We welcome you all, and your families to Nelson Central School.

We also welcome back all of our present students to term two. We hope you have had  an enjoyable time with your children and they have had a good rest . We are excited about the learning to come this term.

Tuesday this week, two more of our senior classes take off to Mistletoe Bay with Sally and Ashley. Their teachers have planned everything down to the last detail  and we know they will have a fantastic time. Thank you to all who have volunteered to help with this camp.

On Tuesday we will also spend time as a staff unpacking the feedback you and your children gave us via the whanau and student surveys last term so we have a clear base line from which to develop our practice.  We are lucky to have Raewyn Ngaamo from Waitako University to support us with this mahi.

Thanks must go  to our fabulous School Community Group who are in the final preparation stages for this Sunday’s Rogain - the Central Challenge.  When I meet with new families one of the things I talk about is the importance of our community to the success of our school and our students.  For events like this I hope each family shows their support by getting behind this hardworking team.

We are still needing volunteers for some roles so please let your teacher know that you can help for a couple of hours. More detail below.

Fingers crossed for great weather.  See you all on Sunday!

Ngā mihi

Room 1 and 2 had a wonderful time last term in the beautiful Mistletoe Bay. You may see Vegemite over the eyebrows in some photos, this was used as protection from the savagely dangerous Marlborough Sounds wildlife.
Mrs Harrison’s (Christine’s) Bottles

This stall is being resurrected from the dark ages to be part of the Rogain and Mini Gala on Sunday 6th May.

Some past pupils who are now parents may remember this stall as an institution at many past galas years ago.

This is how it works.

Bottle or jars of new produce are donated. In the old days this involved sweet drinks etc. and jars of lollies but now in our better healthier environment we are looking for maybe jars of small toys, bottles of shampoo, healthy drinks, jars of chutney, hand cream etc.…The healthy possibilities are endless.

After collection, all bottles are numbered. On the day the punters buy a numbered ticket. They cannot see the numbers on the bottles. When all tickets are sold the bottles may be collected. It is a lucky dip at this stage finding out which bottle or jar matches your number. Everyone gets to take away something for their money.

Please support our Mini Gala by donating a bottle or jar of new produce or filling jar full of goodies such as stationery, small novelty toys or hair accessories. The possibilities are endless. If you buy a ticket you may even get your bottle back!!!! Tickets will be $2.00.

All donated bottles can be left in your child’s classroom for collection.

Thank you for supporting the last hurrah for Mrs Harrison's Bottles

Let’s see if we can get over a hundred bottles.

SCHOOLS CROSS COUNTRY LEAGUE

A reminder that the first of the Mays series starts this Saturday. Please encourage your kids to pre enter via the website.

Here are the details of this year's May Schools League. Please note that there are changes to the scoring system and the grades. We are grateful to Phil Costley who has designed a new format and scoring system for the series. We believe that this will make it fairer for all schools and reward the effort of even the youngest runners.

Nelson Schools Cross Country League 2018:

Saturday 5th May - Rabbit Island (western end), 3 pm first race starts

Saturday 12th May - Branford Park, 3 pm

Saturday 19th May - Rabbit Island (western end), 3 pm

Saturday 26 May - Tahunanui Beach (next to Roller Skating rink), 3 pm

Grades:

Primary Years 1-3 (+ pre-schoolers): Boys race and girls race - 1 km

Primary Years 4-6: Boys race and girls race - 2 km

Intermediate: Boys race and girls race - 2.5 km

College: Boys race and girls race - 3 km

There is no lower age limit as long as children are able to complete the race. Schools may send any number of runners they wish. Children do not need to be affiliated to a school and do not need to attend all races.

New scoring system

Children will be awarded points for their place in their age division (pre school, yr 1, yr 2 etc). The first runner in each age division will get 1 point, the second 2 points and so on. Boys and girls have separate point systems. The top five scores across all age divisions count for the school total and so the winning school has the least number of points.

For example, Pink School's fastest runners are Sophie, 1st in yr 1 girls (so 1 point); Tom 1st in yr 3 boys (1 point); Henry 2nd in yr 3 boys (2 points), Meg 4th in yr 5 girls (4 points) and Jim 8th in yr 6 boys (8 points). Pink School's total is 1, 1, 2, 4 + 8 = 16 points. Green School only got 8 points (1, 1, 1, 2, 3) so they win.

Trophies will still be awarded to the top school in each grade at the end of the four races.

Registration:

Pre-registration is preferred due to the sheer number of children but children can sign-in on the day from 2 pm.

Pre-registration is via nelsoncrosscountry@gmail.com
Details needed are: name
school (or home school)
school year (NOT age)
A race number will be sent by return email. The number must be written on the back of the left hand with marker pen so it is visible to recorders at the end of the race. Registration only needs to occur once as each runner uses their unique number for the whole series. Pre-registered runners do not need to sign in on the day.

Runners participate at their own risk.

Voluntary donation of $1 entry fee per family per race (to assist the inter-regional cross country team with running expenses). To be paid on the day.

Further information, race results and any cancellations (unlikely except in the event of extreme and/or dangerous conditions) can be found on our facebook site https://www.facebook.com/groups/1718343551777300/ Race results will also be sent out to the schools each week.
