Spring is in full swing on the farm!

We've already had 130 volunteers out on the farm this year who have logged 716 total hours! A special thanks to all the United Way of Greater Augusta groups who volunteered at Project GROWS during the Week of Caring in April, including United Bank, City National Bank, Columbia Gas of Virginia, Hollister Incorporated, and Ball Technologies. Volunteers moved compost, prepped garden beds, weeded the spring veggies, and fixed lawn mowers for us!

Spring means field trips! So far this season 244 students have come out to the farm from 4 different schools: Bluestone Elementary, Clymore Elementary, Dixon Educational Center, and Staunton Montessori School's Adolescent Program! We've covered Plant Life Cycles, Soil and Compost, and even the Economics of a Tomato from seed to table -- an interactive demonstration with students exploring how local food systems benefit farmers and the community.

Our partnership with Dixon Educational Center is coming to a close for this school year. 100 Dixon preschool students and 10 Genesis high school students planted salad greens, kale, tomatoes, onions, and radishes while learning about plant life cycles, ecosystems, composting, and plant parts both on farm and in their school garden. It has been a wonderful adventure working with these students since February and we can't wait to see them again in the fall!
