3 reasons to join the Media Impact Forum livestream on May 10: Mentos & Diet Coke, Ben Franklin, and brain fun

We are proud to host this year’s #MIForum in our city of Philadelphia. The daylong event will take place at the American Philosophical Society—the home of America’s oldest learned society—founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1743. The meeting will help philanthropy focus on the special role of science in our national debates, the importance of sharpening the communications of science, and broader issues about understanding how and when communications and storytelling make a difference.

We hope media makers, analysts and others participate in the livestream to hear ideas from, among many others, Upworthy co-founder Eli Pariser, journalist Indira Lakshmanan, and EepyBird—the duo who made this cool video go viral:

Speaking of brain fun, Media Impact Forum speaker Ann Christiano is one of our favorite professors!
Last week, Christiano, the Frank Karel Chair in Public Interest Communications at the University of Florida's College of Journalism and Communications, and the director of the Center for Public Interest Communications, delivered the commencement address to all graduating UF doctoral students. And she challenged them to become "virtuosos of curiosity."

Here's an excerpt:

"Science is filled with virtuosos who shared their stories and challenged themselves to engage people in their work who don’t share their expertise. Einstein was certainly one of them. He was—of course–a brilliant physicist who changed our understanding of time. He was also goofy and kind.

The world requires more of you than to be great in your discipline and communicate with your peers. Each of the virtuosos I’ve told you about today stepped out of their path to push themselves not simply to the top of their field, but to the top of their potential.

For each of them, becoming a virtuoso required them to become great storytellers who opened themselves to new opportunities and shared those vulnerabilities with others. They didn’t just tell better stories. They became them."

The Libra Foundation

We are pleased to welcome the Libra Foundation to our growing list of members. Established in 2002, the foundation's three main funding priorities are women's rights, environmental justice, and social justice and drug policy. We've encountered a few of the foundation's grantees throughout our travels, including WITNESS, the human-rights platform that trains people to document their experiences; #Cut50, the program led by CNN commentator Van Jones that seeks to reduce the prison population; and 350.org, the grassroots organizer whose founder, Jamie Henn, spoke at one of our Frank funder gathering last year.
