May

Spring has definitely arrived and I am thrilled to be able to sit outside and write. I'm crossing my fingers that this will help my productivity as I am trying to put one new personal essay on my website each month (and making them longer) while compiling my previous essays on candy, adding research into the history of each of them, and publishing it as an ebook. More details in the coming months as that project moves along.

How is the weather where you are? You can reply to this email or connect with me on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook and share your thoughts on the weather or anything else.

Until next time,

Personal Essays

The most recent essay posted on my website, in case you missed it:

Libraries and Me
National Library Week was in April, and as I began thinking about all the ways libraries had played a role in my life, I had quite a list! You can read about them at the link, and I'd love for you to reply and let me know how libraries have impacted your life.

I mentioned in the story that the branch of the Volusia County Library nearest me has been closed since Hurricane Irma last October. I am thrilled that they are reopening this Saturday!

I also record an audio version of most blog posts for those who prefer to listen. You can find them on Podomatic and YouTube.

For Reading

Have you ever started a book, then realized you did not enjoy reading it? I know I have, and I often feel like I should go ahead and finish it. Sometimes I hope it will get better (and sometimes it does). If I am nearly finished with it, I think I should go ahead and finish it for the sense of completion. If you struggle with this as well, I think you will enjoy the message in this article - life's too short to finish books you don't enjoy

If you enjoy reading about food and are looking for something more than a cookbook, take a look at this list of 10 Books About Food to Add to Your Home Library. They all sound interesting to me, but Milk catches my attention the most.

Some of Sylvia Plath's possessions were recently auctioned off. This article takes a look at several of the items, the amount they sold for and who bought them. It makes me wonder if I will be famous enough for anyone to pay a premium for any of my things...and if I even want that amount of recognition.

Any of you speak English as a second language? If so, you have my admiration. If we stop and think about it, my native tongue is a mess. I cannot imagine trying to learn it - I had enough trouble with Spanish and French.

For Writers

Have you heard the saying about judging a book by it's cover? Well, people do, whether we like it or not, and this article points out 9 ways a bad cover can ruin your marketing campaign.
