Networked Press Freedom: What Does Journalistic Autonomy Mean Anymore?
Friday May 4, 12:00-1:30PM
Columbia Journalism School
2950 Broadway

In recognition of World Press Freedom Day, the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at the Columbia Journalism School, with the Journalism School's Communications PhD Colloquium Series and Columbia's Knight First Amendment Institute, are pleased to present a discussion on what press freedom means in an era of digital journalism. Where is this networked press, how can we locate its freedom, what is it trying to be free from, and what is such freedom meant to accomplish?

RSVP required

Mike Ananny, Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California, will give a talk based on his new book "Networked Press Freedom" (MIT Press), in which he sketches the idea of networked press freedom, situates it within historical forces and democratic values, and argues that contemporary press freedom lives in a complex set of intertwined social and technological dynamics that, together, create the meaning and power of journalistic autonomy in the networked press.

Ananny's talk will be followed by a response from Jameel Jaffer, founding director of the Knight First Amendment Institute, and an audience Q&A.

The Tow Center for Digital Journalism, based at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, provides journalists with the skills and knowledge to lead the future of digital journalism and serves as a research and development center for the profession as a whole. www.towcenter.org.

The Knight First Amendment Institute defends the freedoms of speech and the press in the digital age through strategic litigation, research, and public education. Our aim is to promote a system of free expression that is open and inclusive, that broadens and elevates public discourse, and that fosters creativity, accountability, and effective self-government. knightcolumbia.org.
