Hello!
We are coming to the end of our events programme in the park so this will be our last newsletter for a while as we work on our application to the Heritage Lottery Fund! This will be submitted for consideration in August. Thank you to everyone who has supported the Sydney Gardens Parks for People Project, given feedback or attended our events.

Updated design plans for the Sydney Gardens restoration project are online

Early Birds Walk and Talk
Sunday 13th May, 5am - 6:30am
Join Lucy Delve (member of Bath Natural History Society & RSPB Bath District) and Sue Palmer (Community Ranger) on an early morning bird walk and talk in Sydney Gardens. We will listen to birdsong and identify which birds are resident in the park.

Recent activities in the park
|
|
|
On World Heritage Day we hosted a Community Day in the park in partnership with the Friends of Sydney Gardens. What a success! We had a fire engine, bees and wax candle making, bug hunting, seed bomb creating, a stone carving demonstration and stalls from Cleveland Pools, Canal and Rivers Trust and more! And lots of feedback on our latest designs for the park.
Other events in April included sowing the Wildflower beds down by the main entrance - go and take a look, they'll be flowering in June hopefully! We also had a training session in pruning from Martin Palfrey and a Bath Naturalists "Natural Neighbourhoods" walk where we discovered 36 species of insects and plants in the gardens.

What is next for the Sydney Gardens Project
|
|
|
We are currently preparing our application to be submitted in August, collecting together the feedback from our public exhibition at the community day and reports on possible play and education options for Sydney Gardens. Our Heritage Intern Hannah will be doing several talks on the history of Sydney Gardens and the project:
Thursday 31st May
2-4pm for the Culture Club (Age UK)
Tuesday 12th June
7-8pm at the Museum of Bath Stone
And we'll be back in September to run some events as part of the Bathscape Walking Festival.

Sydney Gardens Parks for People Project
|
|
|
|
The above image is the token for entry to Sydney Pleasure Gardens from the early 19th Century, which was on display at the recent 'Entertainment in Bath' exhibition at the Victoria Art Museum and Gallery.

Sydney Gardens is one of Britain’s best remaining Georgian Pleasure Gardens. It opened in 1795 and was a favourite spot of Jane Austen.

If successful with the full grant bid, the funding will be used to restore historic buildings, invest in landscape works and garden restoration, and create new play areas for all ages. Alongside the works, a programme of events and activities around art, nature, horticulture, wildlife, play, sport, archaeology and history will take place. The project will celebrate the fascinating history of the Gardens, with its Cosmorama, Labyrinth, Merlins Swing, Concerts, Public Breakfasts, Galas and Illuminations. 'Breathe' - a B&NES Council consultation
|
|
|
The Council has published three options for a new Clean Air Zone for the centre of Bath. A clean air charging zone means drivers of high-emission vehicles are charged when entering a specific geographic zone. The aim is to reduce air pollution and improve health.
The Council is seeking the public’s views on the options and how they could best be introduced in order to maximise the air quality benefits, while minimising any effects on residents and the economy.

News from Friends of Sydney Gardens
|
|
|
The Friends of Sydney Gardens is a community organisation formed in 2013 to promote awareness of the gardens, gather community feedback on improvements and developments and to foster the gardens' care and maintenance. Join the Friends to support Sydney Gardens now and in the future.
|
|
|
Volunteer Gardening Sessions take place on the second Sunday of the month from 10am to 12 noon, led by FoSG. They have the tools and gloves, just go along and join in!
Next session is this Sunday 13th May. Meet by the compound gates by the Holburne entrance into the park.
|
|
|
|
Tasks generally include some weeding, planting, pruning, and managing the flower borders. Sessions are usually led by Jonny East, Chair of FoSG and a gardener himself. Children are welcome but must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. If you can bring your own gloves, then please do!
