Hooray for May!
This month we celebrate and honor our moms. Here at HDGHA we are hosting a special Mother's Day Dinner on May 9, and partnering with our sister organization the Elkton Housing Authority for another moms-only event, too. You can support our moms by donating to the SUCCESS Pantry with items for moms this month. See below for details, and visit our website for full details and more info.
What Moms Really Want
When a baby is on the way, most moms-to-be dream of decorating the nursery, bedtime stories, playground fun, happy birthdays and holidays. But sometimes the reality is radically different, as moms struggle to make ends meet, keep a roof overhead and food on the table. At the end of the day, what moms really want is to be able to take care of their children to give them the best possible start in life. That's where you can help.
This month at HDGHA, we are focusing on what moms really want so we are collecting donations to help them achieve the most basic goal: taking care of their kids. That means donations of health and hygiene products--soap, shampoo, band-aids, toothpaste and toothbrushes, feminine hygiene products, diapers and more. It also means things like paper towels, toilet tissue and cleaning supplies--moms want to provide a healthy home for their families. And of course, it means donations of non perishable foods to help stretch the family budget, with items such as beans and rice, cereals, canned goods, etc.
If you would like to also donate some "treats" for mom, handcreams, body lotions, cosmetics, hair brushes, fragrances and other beauty products are also very much welcomed and appreciated. Drop off your donations to 101 Stansbury Court on Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays from 9:00am-3:00pm, Of course, direct contributions are also needed and are 100% tax deductible. Donate here.
Sunny Skies & Smiles at SomersetServe
Our annual community beautification project on April 28th was a HUGE success, and under sunny skies, our hardworking volunteers brought lots of smiles to residents during SomersetServe. Together they painted, planted, mulched and raked to help our community reflect on the outside the beauty it holds on the inside.
Special shout out to Havre de Grace Police Department, Maryland Transportation Authority(MDTA), Mountain Christian Church and The Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Omicron Chi Zeta Chapter. And many thanks also to Bratton Contracting LLC for being so great and running dumpsters for us all day!
How to Change Someone's Life
Help your neighbors reach for the stars when you sign up to be a Hope Coach!
We all have bad days when we want to quit, but for a person struggling to overcome poverty, those days are extra hard. That's the time when a kind word or helpful hint can make all the difference. YOU can be that difference when you sign up to be a Hope Coach!
A successful Hope Coach is able to see past a nominee's past or current circumstances and encourage them to have positive mindsets by changing self-limiting habits and behavior. Hope Coaches are also knowledgeable about Harford County and can help connect nominees with local resources. Training is required and an application must be completed. For more information, visit The SUCCESS Project website in the Families of Hope section.
Our 2018 Family of Hope designee was Becky Svoboda (pictured on left) and her hope coach was Carla Ciallella (right). Becky says Carla "made her feel special and important" and inspired her to keep on trying. Carla found the whole experience tremendously gratifying, noting her life was changed for the better, too. Are you ready to change someone's life, and maybe your own? Sign up as a Hope Coach today!
