BUSINESS

  • Spotify has released its first earnings report as a public company, showing that the music streaming service has 170 million monthly active users and 75 million paid subscribers (up from 71 million last quarter). Although figures showed steady growth, investors were disappointed that the Swedish company was unable to convert free music listeners into paying subscribers at a faster rate and that discounts may be cutting too deeply into revenue. • Another notable earnings report came from Tesla, which surprised analysts by beating expectations. Despite the win, shares in the electric vehicle maker fizzled anyway during the conference call that followed the announcement as CEO Elon Musk began cutting off analysts' questions (related to profits and capital requirements), calling them "dry" and "boring". • Just as the Trump administration found a reputable addition to its legal team, a curious eyebrow raiser occurred yesterday as Rudy Giuliani revealed on television that Donald Trump repaid the $130,000 in hush money that his longtime attorney Michael Cohen had paid to adult entertainer Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election. This statement, of course, directly contradicts past insistences by Trump that he knew nothing about the payment. I challenge someone, anyone, to come up with a more bizarre timeline than the one we're experiencing right now. NPR
