18 Months at a Glance...

Dear Friends & Colleagues,

I am writing (rather belatedly) to share with you some exciting projects and changes since you last received a news update well over a season ago . More has happened than I can share in one newsletter, and you see I have a hard time keeping up with news updates as a result, but I hope to be sending a second installment soon after this.

Now mostly based in the Pacific Northwest, as I deepen my role as Music Director with Symphony Tacoma, we continue our rich and colorful life from new perspectives. The synergy of music, performance, and art continues to be transformational and enriching.

Here are a few of the musical highlights:

  • Symphony Tacoma announced contract extension of Music Director Sarah Ioannides.
  • 7 World Premiers, 4 multimedia presentations, 2 new art films, 6 living composers collaborations.
  • Concerts engage 14+ collaborating organizations developing deep community partnerships.
  • Attended the first World Culture Summit in Abu Dhabi, invited as a panelist for Carnegie Hall's Link Up Program in New York, honored to judge for King FM's Young Artists Awards in Seattle.
  • Recent debuts include Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, South African National Youth Orchestra and Reno Chamber Orchestra and a return to Opera (where I began my career) conducting a new production of Carmen with Tacoma Opera.
  • Upcoming debuts include Mälmo Symphony Orchestra, Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Santa Rosa Symphony and Seattle Symphony (Untitled Series).
  • With a fond farewell, 2016-17 marked the final season of 12-year tenure with Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra.

In collaboration with the Museum of Glass, Symphony Tacoma premiered Fire Mountain, a multimedia project seeking to express the natural beauty of our area and recognize the global warming challenges of our region through music and film. Fire Mountain was made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and generous private gift in support of Symphony Tacoma.

To kick off Symphony Tacoma's 2017/18 season, Ioannides led the orchestra along with Symphony Tacoma Voices and 7 spectacular guest artists in a performing of West Side Story Symphonic Dances, Suite No.2, Candide excerpts in honor of Bernstein's Centennial.

“She raised the bar for musicianship in our orchestra and that legacy will continue,” Dunleavy said. “I’m excited for her to move on to a bigger symphony, which she already has with Tacoma, and I’m sure she’s got plans to do some other things as well. I think her future is limitless.”

But no matter where the future takes her, Ioannides promises that Spartanburg will remain close
to her heart.

Biography...
 
Described by the New York Times as a conductor with “unquestionable strength and authority” and as a conductor with “magic”, Sarah Ioannides’ dynamic presence on the podium has won praise from audience and critics internationally. Music Director of Symphony Tacoma, and formerly the Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra (2005-17) and the El Paso Symphony (2005-11) she has gained recognition as one of the most engaging and respected conductors of her generation.

With guest engagements spanning six continents, Sarah Ioannides has appeared internationally with the Tonkünstler Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre Nationale de Lyon, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Flemish Radio Orchestra, Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic, Charleston Symphony, Hawai’i Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, New Haven Symphony, New West Symphony, North Carolina Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, and Toledo Symphony.
 
Listed one of the top twenty female conductors worldwide by Lebrecht’s “Woman Conductors: The Power List” in 2016, Ioannides was previously awarded the JoAnn Falletta award for the most promising female conductor. Serving on numerous advisory boards, competition adjudicator, public speaker, and educator, she has worked as panelist for the National Endowment of the Arts for the US Government. In 2015, 2016, and 2017 she received three proclamations for Sarah Ioannides’ Day from both the County and the City of Spartanburg and the city of Tacoma.
 
A zealous supporter of living composers, Ioannides has conducted over 45 World, North American and European premieres. A regular collaborator, assistant and production coordinator with composer/conductor Tan Dun, Ioannides has since directed and commissioned films for live orchestral multimedia performances including new films for Holst’s The Planets, and Steve Reich’s The Desert Music, Milhaud’s Creation du Monde, and a recent double premier of film and music with Fire-Mountain.
 
Beginning her performing career at an early age as violinist in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and horn player in the Surrey County Youth Orchestra she earned Masters degrees from Oxford University and Juilliard School of Music. A recipient of numerous awards and prizes as instrumentalist and conductor, following her studies at the Guildhall School of Music, she came to the United States as a Fulbright Scholar attending the Curtis Institute of Music becoming the assistant and protégé of the late Otto-Werner Mueller. Ioannides is married to trombonist Scott Hartman and together enjoy parenting 3 children; twins, Elsa and Karl (7), and Audrey (10).
