Who Is Your Design Mentor?
One of my mentors (which is just a fancy term for an expert designer who I admire and who agreed to hang out a few times) once asked me: Where do you go to watch tutorials? I responded: "YouTube." He was unimpressed.
What he was really asking was: who do you learn from? Is there a consistent source where you go to glean insights, technical tricks, and overall vision?
Just like a good movie or book, you'll find that a good teacher always has something new to teach you. Some new detail. Or a new way to look at the world.
Of course there is value in learning from a wide variety of teachers and mentors. But we can all admit that in 2018, we are inundated with too much information, so much that we might spend more time sifting through design tutorials, than actually practicing a particular effect.
The trick is to pick one and stick with them for a while until you feel that you've learned enough. Then you can move on to new areas. Select someone who you feel has the same values as you, or the same sense of humor, or whatever your criteria is. In the meantime, you'll save your brain power for the heavy lifting design tasks.
