Launch of Mapping the Social Sector

Thank you so much to everyone who came along to the launch and participated in the workshops.  We were rapt with the turn out, over 130 people, great to see so many social services interested in learning more about the social sector as well as being a great networking opportunity!
I’m looking forward to all the feedback you provided at the workshops, I suspect you’ve set SociaLink’s work programme for years to come!  This feedback will be posted on the link below at the end of next week.

For those of you who did not attend please go to https://socialink.org.nz/for-the-greater-good-mapping-the-social-sector-the-whole-story/ for the full report and summary and information about how to add or update your organisation’s details.  The more organisation’s that participate and the more up-to-date the information is the more useful the database will be for the social sector.

We also launched ‘From the Frontline – Social Services Improving Lives’ to demonstrate the huge impact an organisation can have on someone’s quality of life.  Please also download this (same link as above) and share it with service users and your communities – this helps tell the story to our communities of the immense value and contribution social services make to people’s quality of life.
Labour MP Jan Tinetti made a great speech to launch the project findings.  This is also available on the link above.  It clearly signals where the Labour-led government is heading, very heartening to hear the strong focus on people. Her speech is also available on the same page.
We are keen to get the findings out as far and wide as possible, we are happy to present the findings to your organisation or any networks you are involved with and to have conversations about what these findings mean for the social sector.

New Privacy Resources

The Privacy Commissioners office produced a short animation called "Building Trust". The privacy messages are short and memorable. We encourage you to share it in your workplace or organisation as a way of keeping the privacy-aware theme front and foremost. The short video comes with an accompanying infographic poster.

Volunteering NZ Seeks To Improve Tax Benefits For Volunteers

Volunteering New Zealand made a submission to the Tax Working Group (on 30 April 2018) regarding making changes to the tax system to benefit volunteers and volunteering. A key recommendation is to give real consideration to the implementation of a ‘Volunteer Tax Rebate’.

Spark Foundation's initiative to improve educational outcomes

These two programmes may be of interest to your communities.
Internet access is vital in today's digital world but thousands of New Zealand households are lacking internet at home. With classroom learning moving online, students are increasingly expected to complete homework using the internet, meaning those without home WiFi are at risk of falling behind. Households  requiring internet at home may be eligible for a subsidised home WiFi broadband called Spark Jump. It's designed to be flexible so it's prepaid (meaning there's no credit check or fixed-term contract), costs $10 for 30GB and comes with a free modem (while 30GB of data per month is modest when it comes to watching lots of video and movies online, it is ample for internet browsing, using most educational sites and apps, and watching occasional videos on the likes of Youtube).  Households meeting the following criteria are eligible to sign up: have children under 18, do not have an existing internet connection, home address is in a wireless broadband coverage area as verified by the address checker. Constituents interested in the programme can contact their local Spark Jump partner.

Thought for the week

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it annoys enough people to make it worthwhile
