The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will take effect in the UK on 25 May 2018. It replaces the existing law on data protection (the Data Protection Act 1998) and gives individuals more rights and protection in how their personal data is used by organisations. Therefore we are asking all subscribers who haven't yet done so to re-subscribe or update their information using the website.
If you wish to continue receiving Inspires Online you will need to re-subscribe or update your information as records in the Inspires Online database will be automatically be removed by the 25 May.

The Bishop of Glasgow & Galloway announces his retirement
In delivering his Bishop’s Charge at the Glasgow & Galloway Diocesan Synod on Saturday 12 May, the Rt Rev Dr Gregor Duncan announced his intention to retire from the Office of Bishop of Glasgow & Galloway and said "For the avoidance of doubt and, may it be said, of speculation, I want to begin my charge this year by outlining to you my future plans. As I hope must be fairly obvious, my health has continued to improve and in October this year, assuming I get that far in this life, I will be 68, an age at which I have for quite some time thought it would be good to retire and lay down the pastoral staff on the altar of the Cathedral. By then I will have been bishop of this amazing diocese for 8.5 years, a period I guess to have been quite long enough. I have already informed the Cathedral Chapter, my Staff Group and the Office Staff of that intention, and now I want to make it known to the whole diocese that I intend to retire on 11 October 2018, my 68th birthday.”

General Synod 2018
This year’s General Synod takes place 7-9 June at St Pauls & St George’s Church, York Place, Edinburgh. There is a public gallery at the venue and the Opening Eucharist and sessions of General Synod will be available to follow on video livestream. A link to the livestream will be available on the morning of 7 June. The Synod papers are now available on the Scottish Episcopal Church website.

Speaking in an interview with The Times newspaper last Friday the Most Rev Mark Strange, Bishop of Moray, Ross & Caithness and Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church spoke on a range of topics and shared some of his own experiences, not least his experience of homelessness many years ago. Thy Kingdom Come 2018
 Thy Kingdom Come is a global prayer movement, which invites Christians around the world to pray between Ascension (10 May) and Pentecost (20 May) for more people to come to know Jesus Christ.
This year the Scottish Episcopal Church has created a series of videos for each of the daily themes throughout this period. The videos feature a range of voices from around our Church and are uploaded daily to our social media channels, as well as this page on the website.
If you or your congregation have been involved in any special projects for Thy Kingdom Come please get in touch with the Digital Communications Co-ordinator (aidans@scotland.anglican.org) to discuss how best to share the news of what you are doing.

‘Talking together – walking together’
The Scottish Episcopal Church (SEC) is joining in the Church of Scotland’s ‘Heart and Soul’ event in Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh on Sunday 20 May. The SEC’s Inter-Church Relations Committee will be sharing an exhibition and presentation tent with the Church of Scotland’s Ecumenical Relations Committee and Action of Churches Together in Scotland (ACTS) in journeying together as Christians in Scotland.
There will be displays from:
- a local project in East Kilbride which explored commonalities between congregations
- Side-by-side: A Faith Movement for Gender Justice
- Fife Pilgrim Way
- Our Common Calling - a video outlining the growing relationship between the Scottish Episcopal Church and the Church of Scotland
- World Council of Churches Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace - a short video produced by the WCC
From 12.30pm onwards, please come along to Princes Street Gardens – the tent can be found in the west side of the Gardens, in Heart and Soul’s Village A. Notices
The Rev Margi Campbell will be collated and installed as Provost of St John’s Cathedral, Oban in a special service at the Cathedral on 25 May. The Provost of Oban is also the Rector of St James’ Ardbrecknish and a gathered congregation that meets at Kilbrandon.
The Rev Lynsay Downs will be appointed Rector at St Ternan, Banchory on 11 August 2018.
The Rev David de Verny has been granted Permission to Officiate at Christ Church, Dalbeattie on 1 May 2018.
The Rev Elaine Garman will be resigning as Mission Enabler for the Diocese of Argyll and The Isles on 30 June 2018 and will be appointed Rector at St John the Evangelist, Forfar on 14 July 2018.
The Rev James Lapping will be appointed Assistant Priest at St Silas, Glasgow on 23 June 2018.
The Rev Kenneth George Bachell died on 12 May 2018 aged 96. He served as Vicar at St Michael & All Angels, Andover 1960-1968. From there he became Vicar at St Albans, Southampton 1968-1976. Afterwards he served as Warden at the Manchester Diocesan Conference House 1976-1979. He then worked as Vicar at St John's Holdenhurst, Bournemouth 1979-1983. In 1983 he took the position of Vicar at St Mary's, Froyle until his retirement in 1987. From 1988 he held Permission to Officiate in the United Diocese of St Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane until his passing.

SEI Lecture 2018
The annual SEI Lecture will be held this year on Thursday 11 October at 5.30 pm in Parliament Hall, South Street, St Andrews. Professor Elaine Graham, Grosvenor Research Professor of Practical Theology, University of Chester and Canon Theologian of Chester Cathedral, will deliver a paper entitled ‘Liberating the Laity: a Theology for a Learning Church’. The Lecture, sponsored by St Mary’s College, the School of Divinity, University of St Andrews, is open to all free of charge and will be followed by a reception.

 The Crask Inn was featured on BBC One's The One Show on Monday 30 April
Following it's dedication as a charge of the Diocese of Moray, Ross & Caithness on 21 April by the Most Rev Mark Strange, Bishop of Moray, Ross & Caithness in April, BBC Journalist Sarah Mack visited Denise and Douglas Campbell, the managers at The Crask Inn, near Lairg in Sutherland to find out about the work they are doing.

Film Preview: Edie
Edith Moore (Sheila Hancock), known as Edie, is a woman in her eighties. In the months following her husband’s death, her daughter Nancy (Wendy Morgan) plans for her to move to a retirement home - and Edie feels like it is the beginning of the end. It seems she will die still carrying all the regrets of her past. One regret haunts her most of all. When Edie was younger, her father planned a climbing trip for them in the Scottish Highlands. She yearned to go, but her husband made her stay at home. Now nearly thirty years later, Edie decides to make the trip alone. As Mt Suilven looms ahead, she realises how daunting the climb will be. She hires Jonny (Kevin Guthrie), a local man, to help her prepare - sparking an unexpected friendship, and an adventure which will change her life.
