President's Note

Planning is underway for our Annual Neighborhood Summer Picnic.  As usual, LENA will provide burgers, hotdogs, and condiments.  We've also secured a band for live music that starts at 5PM.  Food will be served promptly at 5PM however feel free to come as early as 4PM.  We could use a few volunteers to help so let us know if you've some time to spare.  We'd love to have you join us!
This is also a busy time for us.  Be sure to check out our Event Calendar for up to date information.  Hope you're enjoying your summer!
Lastly, we're working out the details for a meeting with City staff and MGSD administrators regarding the demolition permit/request to the three properties owned by the district.  These properties are vacant and have been for a number of years (one is located in the corner of Monona Drive and E Coldspring and the other two are in the corner of Jerome and E Coldspring).  More details to come...

How to Recycle Fluorescent Bulbs

If you have old fluorescent bulbs or tubes in need of disposal, you need to recycle them the right way.  And that means never placing them in the recycling carts.  Fluorescent bulbs and tubes contain mercury, which is very hazardous. And, yes, even the small curly fluorescent bulbs, which are called compact fluorescent lamps (or CFLs) contain mercury.

Here’s what you should do:

Take fluorescent bulbs, tubes, and CFLs to a retailer that sells these items in order for them to be safely recycled. Dane County and City of Madison ordinances require retailers that sell fluorescents to have a program to accept them for recycling. Some retailers may need to charge a small fee for their recycling program, so be sure to check with your chosen retailer about fees before taking bulbs to them.

Fluorescent bulbs, tubes, and CFLs can be also be recycled at Dane County Clean Sweep. This county facility handles all hazardous household materials, including other mercury containing devices like old thermometers. For more information about Dane County Clean Sweep, visit their website, www.danecountycleansweep.com.

Never place old fluorescent bulbs, tubes, or CFLs in the recycling cart at your home or business.
Workers sort through material placed into your recycling cart by hand at the recycling facility. Placing these bulbs and tubes into the recycling could expose those workers to hazardous mercury when the bulbs break.

If you break a fluorescent bulb, be sure to
follow the EPA guidelines on how to quickly and safely clean the area.

For more information about the hazards of mercury exposure,
visit the Wisconsin Department of Health Services’ website.

Additional information about fluorescent recycling can also be found on the Streets Division website,
www.cityofmadison.com/streets.

School Connection

Looking for after-school and summer programs for your child? MOST (Madison-area Out-of-School Time) is making it easier with the "one-stop-shop" online program finder. No matter what your budget is or where you live in the Madison area, you can find the right program for your child, from kindergarten through high school, from homework help to karate or art classes.

With a few clicks, the program finder can help you make the most of your child's or teen's time out-of-school. You can search for programs by grade, distance from where you live or the type of program you're looking for, as well as other searchable criteria.

Start your search at mostmadison.org and let your child dream, explore and discover their passions

MOST is a city-wide collaboration between the Madison Metropolitan School District, the City of Madison, and 40 different youth- serving organizations. The goal is to help close Madison's opportunity gap by ensuring all Madison's children have access to comprehensive, high-quality out-of-school time programs. Out of School Time opportunities for young people and families is a key leverage point for addressing equity issues in our community. The program finder is a small part of this, but we know there are more fundamental issues, and as our organization and partnerships grow, MOST is shifting our time and energy to address more core issues impacting families ability to access OST opportunities in Madison. If you are interested in learning more, feel free to reach out to Nathan Beck, the MOST Coordinator, nbeck@cityofmadison.com .
