D1.jobs: New opportunities below at Bethany College (DIII), UIC, Stanford, SMU & San Diego State. Post your openings in the most-read daily publication in all of college athletics. Click here.
As you know by now, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of New Jersey & the legalization of sports gambling, pushing the issue to Congress. "Congress can regulate sports gambling directly, but if it elects not to do so, each State is free to  act on its own. Our job is to interpret the law Congress has enacted and decide whether it is consistent with the Constitution. PASPA is not." (link - full opinion); Important takeaways from around college athletics & the sports industry yesterday:
+ Rutgers AD Hobbs: "I think for New Jersey, there are tax benefits and revenue associated with that. For the state of New Jersey, I understand their position. But in terms of Rutgers and the way we do things, the less access to opportunities like that the better. We'll continue to remind everyone that is involved in Rutgers athletics that they cannot engage in sports wagering. […] I think there will be a reexamination of all positions with respect to what games are played and where. We'll just wait for that guidance." (link)
+ NCAA Chief Legal Officer Remy: "Today the United States Supreme Court issued a clear decision that PASPA is unconstitutional, reversing the lower courts that held otherwise. While we are still reviewing the decision to understand the overall implications to college sports, we will adjust sports wagering and championship policies to align with the direction from the court." SEC Commish Sankey: "We are in the process of reviewing the Supreme Court's decision and its potential long-term impact on the SEC and collegiate sports in general. One of our first priorities is to ensure that we have thorough and effective systems in place to educate our student-athletes, coaches and other personnel on all issues associated with sports wagering." Alabama AD Byrne: "We are aware of today's ruling by the Supreme Court, and we will monitor the developments closely as they occur." (link)
+ ACC Commish Swofford: "Today's ruling by the Supreme Court was clear in redefining how individual states can implement sports gambling. The ACC footprint includes 10 states, and we will wait to see what plays out within each. We will discuss with our membership and determine how we proceed." (link)
+ North Carolina AD Cunningham: "As easy as it is to place bets online and everywhere else, I don't think it'll have a significant immediate impact." N.C. State's Yow: "I'm going to have to learn a lot more about gambling." (link)
+ Mississippi is one state that could see bets by football season & Ole Miss AD Bjork indicates he & his team started working on the challenges last Fall, "We have eight full-time compliance officials right now, and they’ve obviously got full-time jobs. So if you add gaming and regulation to that, maybe you need an expert who is specifically aligned on gaming laws. We think it’s probably going to require an increase in staff as well as external resources to monitor. Those are things we need to get our arms around." Oklahoma AD Castiglione: "Going forward, I think it’s important for universities and colleges to seek the assistance of our respective states in developing a regulatory approach in order to properly manage our overall responsibility in this new age, as well as uphold the integrity of our competitions." Former Nebraska/Miami (FL) AD & current consultant Eichorst: "It’s too early to tell what overall implications will be. In my view, schools should steer clear of asking for any potential upside revenue associated with gambling, but if it helps state better fund overall public education, then so be it. But it doesn’t have to be a direct connection." The Athletic's Auerbach & Vannini: "Still, multiple athletic directors contacted Monday said they hope their state takes advantage of the ruling and that they can figure out a way to get a cut of the revenue." (link)
+ Northwestern AD Phillips: "I’m in favor of a federal framework that would provide a uniform approach to any sports gambling in states that choose to permit it. The integrity of college sports remains our highest priority. Would I have been in favor of it? No. But the Supreme Court has decided. [...] Would it increase eyes of viewership and attendance at games? I don’t know if I could make that correlation." (link)
+ UNLV AD Reed-Francois: "While we will continue to engage with the NCAA membership regarding the impact of today’s Supreme Court ruling, we have already been in contact with the Mountain West Conference regarding potential bid submissions for NCAA postseason events. Working collaboratively with local and regional leaders, we are confident that Las Vegas can present competitively to host future competitions, as there is a proven track record of success in hosting multiple, large-scale sporting events here in Southern Nevada." (link)
+ Knight Commission: "The Knight Commission encourages states to prohibit wagering on amateur and college sports. There should be a clear distinction between wagering on the outcomes of sport professionals and betting on students who compete for their college and high school sports teams." (link)
+ Utah Senator Hatch plans to introduce a bill to "protect honesty and principle in the athletic arena." More, "At stake here is the very integrity of sports." (link)
+ Dallas Mavericks Owner Cuban: "I think everybody who owns a top four professional sports team just basically saw the value of their team double, at least. […] I mean, look, it could finally become fun to go to a baseball game again. I think this is something that benefits everybody even tangentially associated with sports." (link)
+ The Athletic's Davis & CBSSports.com's Norlander both believe the development could be a huge boon for MBB & the NCAA Tournament. (linklink)
+ CBSSports.com's Dodd: "Never mind being fair, how does the NCAA wrap its collective mind around all of this?" (link)
+ Yahoo's Robinson: "It wasn’t that long ago when the NFL griped incessantly about the secondary ticket market that made massive sums of cash off tickets the league had already sold to fans. But after years of wondering how to tackle the sellers who had created a massive underground economy off of the league’s product, the NFL decided to join in and double-dip on its own ticket sales." (link)
+ Sports Illustrated's McCann with a massive breakdown of the situation. (link)
+ Which states are next after New Jersey? Here's a useful graphic. (link)
+ Recode's Kafka: "Things to look for: Companies that know how to reach people on the internet, via mobile apps, connecting with people who runs sports books. Fan Duel and Draft Kings are obvious candidates, but so are any media companies with big sports arms - ESPN, Turner, CBS." (link)
Loyola-Chicago is poised to reap the benefits of this year's NCAA Tournament run with a potential 170% increase in season ticket sales, assuming last year's season ticket holders and those who have put down deposits for seats this year follow through when sales open this week. In addition, the Ramblers have seen a 660% increase in donations compared to the March 1-April 2 time frame from a year ago. Donations will support the $18.5M Alfie Norville practice facility, which is scheduled to be completed by July 2019, and Senior Assoc AD of External Operations Soboro adds that the university anticipates a significant boost in merchandise royalties this summer. (link)
MLive.com columnist Austin examines the road ahead for Michigan State with leadership in both the president's and AD's offices currently in a tenuous position. The leadership vacuum comes after a period MBB HC Izzo had dubbed a "golden age" of MSU athletics, particularly regarding MBB and FB, and Austin questions whether the rapport between former Prez Simon and former AD Hollis, the support from both Izzo has long credited for his team's success, can be duplicated. Former MSU VP Denbow, however, notes that change can be positive, provided it is infrequent: "It's how people work together and how they optimize the synergies of an administrative team," which is something "you can't predict ahead of time." (link)
Arkansas AD Yurachek chats with former Tennessee AD Hamilton on his path to the big chair in Fayetteville & his initial aims when he walked in the door, "Every opportunity I’ve had, I’ve always put together a 100 day plan. I really feel like that is the best way to get to know the fabric and culture of the university and community that I will be serving in." The pair also talked plenty about the challenge of leadership. Yurachek: "It’s important for everybody in our organization to understand how much I care about them, their role, and what their role means to the success of our Student-Athletes." More. (link)
More perspective on the NCAA's new deal with Genius Sports comes from Bloomberg's Novy-Williams & Soshnick, "The two groups will share revenue from the sale of the data, including deals with media companies that want the information to use during broadcasts or with fan sites that want to deliver statistical analysis for die-hards. Schools will be offered the technology free for three years. […] While there’s nothing in this partnership to address gambling, deals like this are often the first step toward selling a sport’s data more broadly, including to sports-book operators." However, on that last point, NCAA EVP Luck says there's no interest in going down that road anytime soon. (link)
Latest SBJ: Initial bids for Sports Illustrated were due last Friday as Meredith reportedly looks for $100M to $150M. Cash flow for SI is estimated at $20M & magazines commonly go for a 5x to 6x multiple. (link); Key advise from longtime ESPN CFO Driessen as she's set to retire next January after 33 years of leading in Bristol, "Don’t get caught in the trap of speaking just to be speaking. It’s important to speak up, but you need to have a point of view that makes sense and is worthy for an audience to listen to. […] In the passion of negotiation, sometimes you get so personally involved that you need to step back and remember why you are there. Keep calm. If there’s a critical issue and strong disagreements, just take a break." (link); 'Beer at Ballgames' has certainly been a notable game experience development over the last couple of years & the growth of craft options has led to sport organizations revamping their offerings. A number of MLB & MiLB relationships reviewed with in-venue craft sales hopping. More, along with some great charts at the bottom. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Newly minted Florida FB HC Mullen hints that UF may be less likely to schedule games with marquee opponents, such as last season's opener against Michigan and 2019's opener against Miami (FL), citing the annual built-in non-conference matchup with Florida State. Mullen also knows it's unlikely fans would be willing to give up the annual FSU game, saying: "I don't think that's good for anybody. I think you have to play that game." That doesn't mean Mullen isn't leaving the door open for other event games, offering: "I'll go play in London or Ireland or one of those, right? I know the entire athletic department is like 'That's a two-year trip, deal' to get that set up to open the season and do something like that just for the exposure of the program." (link)

The database of FBS AD compensation data from 2017-2018 is certainly a sticky piece of content, but be sure not to gloss over the work of Spencer Fane's Lattinville & Denny on how the tax impact of some deferred compensation arrangements can impact leaders. The pair use Iowa State AD Pollard's contract as an example, "The present value of the Section 457(f) accelerated payout payments that would be includible in AD Pollard’s 2018 income would be approximately $4,422,588. Assuming a combined federal and state effective tax rate of 40%, AD Pollard could have a tax consequence in the year of termination on the paid and accelerated portions of the payout equal of $1,945,258. Given that he would have only received approximately $660,834 in payout payments in accordance with the contract schedule, this could pose a significant problem for AD Pollard." To be clear, there's no suggestion that Pollard will be bought out, but the illustration seems super useful for ADs to consider when negotiating the guts of their employment agreements. (link)
Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner continues working through the Pac-12's latest financial results as he identifies where $27.9M of revenue may be hiding from FY17. Considers the scenario where all ad revenue was $17.7M & NCAA support was $10.2M. If the math is correct when considering distributions to member institutions, Wilner is left with $70M worth of annual expenses for the Pac-12 Networks. "200 FB & MBB games [...] 650 Olympic sports with extremely limited viewership. Cast that against approximately $70 million in operational expenses, and it seems like there is a return-on-investment question for us to ponder..." (link)
Fox delivered its upfront presentation yesterday & there was no lack of sports talk. AdAge's Crupi appropriately notes, "Reminder that the NFL, college football and MLB account for nearly 90% of Fox's GRPs during the fourth quarter. […] Why does it matter that Fox Sports owns the fall? Because in the 20 weeks of the football season, consumers spend about $300 billion more than they do January through August." Fox Networks Group Prez of Advertising Revenue Marchese unveiled a new advertising unit, the 'JAZ pod' that ensured advertisers access to the most valuable programming. (linklink)
New Louisville MBB HC Mack: "I always wanted to take that next step at a place that truly cared about basketball. Sometimes coaches talk among themselves about being at a place where football is more important and they leave you alone. I don’t know. At Xavier, we were at the forefront — basketball was it. I didn’t want to go to a place where they didn’t necessarily passionately care about basketball. That’s no disrespect to football at Louisville, which has been great, but there’s a huge commitment to basketball. And I always thought the ACC was the best basketball conference in the country. Really, there aren’t many Louisvilles out there. [...] I always bet on myself. I’d be naive to think there weren’t issues that preceded us that were going to be obstacles, but if I felt like they were impossibilities, I wouldn’t have taken the job." More Mack with Yahoo's Forde. (link)
Former Arizona Track & Field AC Carter gets sentenced to five years in prison for his actions toward former Wildcats student-athlete Gibson back in 2015. Gibson at yesterday's sentencing, "My life has been shattered because of the trust I put into Craig and the university. I wish I didn't have to think about any of this because it hurts so much. No matter how hard I try I can't escape it." Carter: "I just want them to know, her and her family to know, that they'll never have to worry about me ever again, that I'm truly sorry." (link)
More Personnel: The NCAA promotes Dir. of Championships for Men's LAX and Wrestling Holman to Managing Director for Championships Operations and Playing Rules. Holman will also be in charge of the College World Series, among several other championship events. (link); Former NFL VP of Officiating Blandino is the new NCAA College Football Officiating Dir. of Instant Replay. (link); Auburn AD Greene and MBB HC Pearl "continue to have conversations about the program and where we think we need to be in order to make sure that we've got sustained success." (link); Michigan AD Manuel and MBB HC Beilein also in talks about a contract extension, Beilein says "stay tuned." (link); Texas will use the services of College Sports Solutions in its hunt for a new Track & Field HC. (link); Missouri MBB HC Martin will replace Kansas MBB HC Self on the NCAA MBB Oversight Committee when his term concludes next month. (link); George Mason WBB HC Milleson gets an extension through 2020-21. (link)
UConn AD Benedict covers a handful of items during an area Chamber breakfast, says new MBB HC Hurley has been impressive thus far, especially in the area of staff-building, "He put an incredible staff together, which is something that’s very important to any head coach. You can’t do it on your own." Benedict knows MBB needs to carry its weight for the AAC & here's some interesting rationale for upgrades to Baseball, Soccer & Softball facilities, "Those sports won’t get us into another conference, but they could keep us out. Those facilities don’t meet the standards that UConn should have." $88M has been raised thus far for the projects. Benedict also indicates non-conference MBB scheduling has included a number of conversations with former Big East foes & takes a pass on discussing the departure of former HC Ollie. (link)
Syracuse will spend $118M on Carrier Dome renovations to include a new roof, air conditioning, a movable (yep, it's hung on a track system) center-hung scoreboard and more. Amazingly, no Football, Basketball or Lacrosse seasons will be affected and work will start this summer. The new roof, scoreboard, improved wireless technology, ADA upgrades and new sound and lighting systems should be ready by 2020, with the rest of the upgrades coming on line by 2022. Cute AD Wildhack: "We're thrilled. This will enhance the experience of anyone who visits the Dome, whether it's our student body or out of town visitors." Funding will come from school reserves, borrowing and fundraising. A phase two is likely and could include luxury seating and replacing bench seats in the lower portion of the stadium with individual seats. (link)
Mas Facilities: Kentucky's new $49M baseball stadium is on schedule to be completed by the fall. RossTarrant Architects, HNTB and contracting company Congleton-Hacker have all been involved. Lots of comments from Executive Assoc. AD for Internal Operations Saal. (link); North Texas will replace the turf at Apogee Stadium this summer with FieldTurf Cool Play. (link); Ball State's Dr. Don Shondell Practice Center for volleyball and basketball will soon be open for business as the official ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for July 21. A couple of pics are included in the article. (link); Towson will spend $2.7M on a new field and complex for the Field Hockey program, which is part of an $8M overall upgrade to women's sports facilities for the Tigers. (link)
The Big 12 already has an annual MBB challenge with the SEC, but might the league also enter into a similar agreement with the Big East? The move would lock in 20 high-major opponents for Big 12 teams, with 18 conference games and one each against the SEC and Big East. Iowa State AD Pollard: "What’s happening is some other leagues are considering going to 20 games, so if a couple leagues go to 20 games, it’ll be harder to get a non-conference home and home. So we’ve had some discussions with the Big East about the possibility of doing a scheduling alliance to counterbalance the SEC Challenge so that we would have 20 games locked up." Kansas Special Asst. to the AD Keating calls it "certainly worth looking into." (link)
Front Office Sports profiles the social efforts of Grand Canyon as the Lopes' Twitter account has gone from 5K to 50K followers in the last two years, thanks in part to a digital team that's grown from two staffers to 11. Assoc. AD for Strategic Communications & Public Relations Hampton: "The nice thing about digital and social is you rely less on resources than you would something else. So from a small school mentality, you may not have a lot of resources or staff. In the NFL or at big schools, you may have set designers that are there just to create content and do that. We’re creating that graphic content on top of everything else we’re doing." Snappy TV, Team Infographics, capturing facility build progress & a "never stop learning environment" are also keys to the story. (link)
Also Noticed: Looks like Oklahoma, Houston & Ohio State comms teams won Super 11 awards. (link); Nebraska AD Moos and Iowa AD Barta are in talks of getting the FB Black Friday rivalry back in place. (link); Check out this podcast with Kansas Asst. AD for Sports Performance Hudy, courtesy of 1.QuestionAthleticDirectorU, in which she discusses leadership and creating a successful culture in the role of Athletic Performance, in particular matching that role to the HC's style. (link); Miami (FL) FB will host UAB in 2020 at Hard Rock Stadium, thus completing the Canes' non-conference schedule that season. (link); More from Coral Gables as Miami's Turnover Chain now has its own bobblehead. For $40 you can put it on the shelf next to Sister Jean's. (link); Long Beach State AD Fee tweets out pictures of his new @NIKEiD custom kicks. (link); English soccer club Chelsea FC have signed a £50M deal with Hyundai for a five-year sleeve sponsorship, the largest of its kind in the Premier League. The London side's deal is reportedly worth double the amount of reigning PL champion Manchester City's sleeve deal with Nexxen Tires and is likely to change the landscape for such deals. Fellow PL giants Arsenal and Manchester United will negotiate new sleeve deals next season. (link)
Former Acting Director of National Intelligence Dempsey for HBR: "There is no single leadership trait that guarantees success in any profession, but there is, based on my experience, one that many of the best leaders share: a fierce commitment to objectivity. And yet I realize it’s often not easy for leaders to remain objective." But, how do the best leaders maintain objectivity? Dempsey: "...to maintain a high standard of objectivity, the best leaders I’ve worked with have insisted on the highest possible analytic and information gathering tradecraft, and relied on structured analytic and decision-making processes to filter out actual or unconscious biases. In other words, during periods of great stress, our best leaders rely on sound tradecraft as their safe harbor." More. (link)
