Our May 2018 Associate Editor, Lisa DiMartino, reviews an article describing the use of quasi-experimental designs (QEDs), alternative designs to RCTs, and provides examples of recent implementation research that utilized QEDs.

7th International Conference on Evidence-Based Healthcare

The 7th Annual Conference on Evidence-Based Healthcare is organized by the Gulf Medical University in association with the International Society for Evidence-based Healthcare to explore the theme "Re-imagining Evidence-Based Medicine" through pre-conference workshops, plenary lectures, breakout sessions and panel discussions.
 
Conference organizers are accepting abstract submissions for poster, oral, and workshop presentations through June 30, 2018.

Fellowships
Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Pediatrics Section of Nutrition at the University of Colorado School of Medicine
 
Postdoctoral fellowship in behavioral science related to the development of young children’s eating behaviors. The scope of the project includes development of intervention materials for an intervention related to parent-child interactions in the domains of eating and motor development, pilot testing of intervention materials, data analysis, and development and implementation of a pilot randomized controlled trial.
 
Viable candidates will have a PhD in the subject discipline and training in Human Development, Psychology, Intervention/Implementation Science, and/or Nutrition.

Population Health Research Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of Rochester
 
The University of Rochester Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) is seeking outstanding candidates for a one-year Population Health Research Postdoctoral Fellowship. The goal of this Fellowship program is to produce interdisciplinary researchers, trained in team science and competency-based skills, who can conceptualize research across the translational continuum from basic research through population health. Fellows will choose one of three tracks: Electronic Health Record as a Resource for Research; National, Regional and Local Database Analytics; and Population Health Behavior Change.

Faculty Position in Implementation Science at University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy
 
The College of Pharmacy at the University of Kentucky invites applications for a qualified implementation scientist at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor to maintain, coordinate, and integrate implementation science (IS) research in the area of alcohol and substance use disorders (ASUDs).  Specifically, the College is seeking candidates with a focus on ASUD to support collaborative science that ultimately improves human health by preventing and treating ASUDs.
 
Qualified candidates will have a PharmD, MD, or PhD in a related field; a developing or sustained record of using varied IS methods designed to achieve the overall objectives of IS applied to the prevention and treatment of ASUD; and a developing or sustained record of scholarly achievement in IS as appropriate based on rank.

Duke Population Health Sciences Summer Institute 2018

Registration is now open for Duke University's Department of Population Health Sciences Summer Institute. Led by five of Duke's leading researchers, participants can attend day-long workshops on measurement science, qualitative methods, and/or dissemination and implementation science. The Summer Institute is geared toward early- to mid-career researchers and professionals working in health care and health services research who want to learn new methods to broaden their research design

Training Institute for Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health (TIDIRH)

August 13-December 7, 2018—Bethesda, MD
 
The Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR) in coordination with a number of National Institutes of Health (NIH) Institutes and Centers and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), are hosting this training institute for investigators at any career stage interested in conducting D&I research in health. 

Attendees will complete a four-month online course, and two-day in-person training. There is no fee to apply or attend the institute, but participants must pay for and arrange their own travel.
 
Applications will be accepted through June 12, 2018.

Summer Institute on Implementation Science: Bolstering the Work Force to Advance Change Eff­ectively

This new two-day Summer Institute seeks to provide foundational knowledge of implementation science and to build professional knowledge and skills for supporting change using implementation best practices. The Implementation Science Masterclass, hosted by the Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care South London (CLAHRC South London), is a two-day course designed for health professionals, researchers, patients and service users, policymakers, commissioners and managers. The Masterclass includes lectures, group work, and guidance to help participants work more effectively on implementation projects.

Fireside Chat on Implementation Science & Healthcare Delivery Research Program (HDRP) Crossroads
 
As part of the Advanced Topics in Implementation Science webinar series, Dr. David Chambers hosted a ‘fireside chat’ with Dr. Paul Jacobsen, Associate Director of the Healthcare Delivery Research Program (HDRP) within the Division of Cancer Control & Population Sciences. HDRP supported research seeks to understand the many factors that influence care, which can be used to design and test interventions that will promote patient-centered, evidence-based care. Drs. Chambers and Jacobsen discussed current intersections with IS and HDRP as well as future direction for collaboration.

Community-based sexual health research with marginalized and HIV affected communities: Strategies for translating research to policy and practice
 
As part of the KT Connects Webinar Series, this webinar focused on developing knowledge translation (KT) strategies in research with marginalized communities including integrated KT within community-based research. The presenter discussed strategies to ensure that research reaches policy makers and practice leaders using examples from community-based research projects and case examples in policy engagement.

Improving the Design and Application of Implementation Strategies
  
As part of the Prevention Science & Methodology Group (PSMG)'s Virtual Grand Rounds, Dr. Byron J. Powell provided an overview of emerging approaches to the design and application of implementation strategies, a discussion of key priorities for the field, and an introduction to a study focused on developing and piloting a novel method for tailoring implementation strategies to specific contexts.
