Thank You to Dr. Jennifer Harvey!

We had an amazing few days with Dr. Harvey.  Our book signing raised nearly $500 for our neighborhood schools, and our Saturday event had close to 60 people deeply engaged in powerful discussions about race and equity.  Thank you to everyone who came, and to Dr. Harvey for her time, expertise, and passion.

Here are some photos from the Saturday event.

Throughout her time here, Dr. Harvey recommended a number of resources.  Here is a partial list:

Eddie Morre - The Guide for White Women Who Teach Black Boys
Jeanne Theoharis - The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks
Michelle Alexander - The New Jim Crow
Debby Irving - Waking Up White
Beverly Daniel Tatum- Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?

And, a blog with resources for talking about race with young children.
Raising Race Conscious Children

Finally, Here is a description of White Racial Identity Development that seemed to resonate with people at the workshop.
And, here is a list of additional resources provided by Dr. Harvey.

We Still Have Copies of the Book

If you didn't get a chance to purchase a copy of Raising White Kids - we still have copies for sale. They are $20, and a portion of the proceeds will go to our neighborhood elementary schools.  Just shoot us an email and we can drop one off to you, or meet up somewhere to deliver.
PHNEE Work Groups - Get Involved!

We have been spending time on the internal structure for PHNEE, and have come up with some work groups in order to focus our energies on areas where we feel we can have the most impact.  We would like to invite you to an informational meeting about these work groups, to see if you'd like to get involved.
1 - Community Engagement:
This group will focus on building awareness around issues of equity in our schools, and deepening our connections to the community through events.  This might include planning events, school walking tours, library conversations, etc.

2 - Communications:
This group will focus on raising awareness of school equity and driving the conversation in the neighborhood and throughout the Denver education community.  This might include writing articles, finding content to promote though our existing channels, finding additional outlets to leverage to raise our voice. The topics will be coordinated with the community engagement work group.

 3 - Committee Recruitment:
This group will focus on bringing additional voices to the table to inform our work.  One of our primary goals is to create the space for authentic community engagement and dialogue.  This might involve attending community meetings, visiting schools, hosting focus groups, etc.
4 - Policy Recommendations:
This group will begin the work of developing recommendations for the future of Park HIll's elementary schools. This will include examining current enrollment data and projections, studying existing and new school models, reaching out to stakeholders to learn more their desires, and other activities.

5 - Park Hill Schools Fund:
This group will explore the feasibility of a shared pool of money to be equitably distributed among the schools in Park Hill.  This will include identifying sources of funds, as well as methods for equitably distributing those funds.
On June 6th, from 5:30pm - 8:30pm, at the Park Hill Collective Impact offices, 3475 Holly St., we will gather to discuss the origins of PHNEE, and how we view this work unfolding going forward.  We will have a chance to discuss these work groups, make sure they feel like the right focus, and decide who wants to participate in which groups.  PHNEE Steering Committee members will be chairing these work groups, but we will be looking for co-chairs as well.

We are very excited about the possibilities that the amazing schools in our neighborhood present, and we can’t wait to engage with you all on ways to help them serve all of our kids.

Please click here to RSVP to the meeting so we know how much food we’ll need.  You can also let us know if you need childcare or translation services.  If you can’t make the meeting, but one of these work groups appeals to you, you can indicate that on the RSVP as well.  We will reach out after the meeting with updates.
