Your May TriEx Update

Last week was Pink Shirt Day, a day where people dress in pink to symbolise a stand against bullying. The TriEx team took the opportunity to get behind this great cause, as you can see in the image above. You can read about some of our activity for Pink Shirt Day below.

Our Flu programme has been tremendously successful this year, and we are very proud to be keeping New Zealand workers healthy by administering flu vaccinations in so many workplaces. Influenza is a serious illness and your best protection is vaccination. Our 2018 flu programme will be coming to an end soon, however there is still time to send us your booking form for onsite vaccinations. More about this below.

Our highly regarded Asbestos Awareness training courses are scheduled to re-start on June 8. These 4 hour courses are essential for anyone who is likely to come into contact with asbestos as part of their daily work activity. We have an awareness course for tradespeople and an awareness course for managers. Learn more about this below.

TriEx is appearing at the next Safeguard Conference on May 30 and 31 at SkyCity in Auckland. This year the conference is all about building trust, as organisations that place trust in their people have the best health and safety outcomes. You can read more about this below.

Lastly, WorkSafe are currently issuing improvement notices for air quality in workplaces. The largest proportion of workplace contaminants are taken into the body by inhalation, which can lead to a range of long lasting health effects that may not begin to show symptoms until many years into the future. Learn more how TriEx can assist you in this area below.

Enjoy the read! From the TriEx Team.

TriEx Flu Campaign - There is still time!

Our nurses have vaccinated thousands of New Zealand workers in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, and thousands more have redeemed our Flu Vouchers at Green Cross Pharmacies across the country. It's great to see so many businesses protect their team against influenza.

This years Workplace Flu campaign is coming to an end soon, so your window to book your onsite flu vaccinations is closing quickly! Our final date for onsite bookings is Friday June 8.

The earlier a flu vaccination is administered the better, as it takes up to 2 weeks for the vaccine to start taking effect. It's never too late to be vaccinated however, and we'll still have Flu Vouchers available after June 8.

Join the fight against Influenza, and protect your team and those in your community. To book your onsite Flu Vaccination before June 8, go to theflu.co.nz or email flu@triex.co.nz NOW.

Pink Shirt Day

Last Friday May 18 was Pink Shirt Day, a day where people around the world wear pink to symbolise a stand against bullying.

Bullying is a serious issue and can affect people's physical and emotional health, and can greatly affect workplaces negatively. Workplace bullying is considered a risk to health and safety.

Workplace bullying can:

  • affect staff morale
  • lead to stress and impact employee health
  • increase staff turnover
  • damage relationships
  • impact on productivity and profit
  • lead to an employee taking action against the employer, causing a financial impact
  • damage the organisation’s reputation as well as the reputation of the person whose behaviour is in question.

Last week we published a series of blog posts on the subject of bullying to help raise awareness of bullying:
What is bullying?
What to do if you're being bullied.
How you can help someone being bullied.

You can also find a Bullying prevention toolbox on WorkSafe NZ's website.

One of the components in our Psychological First Aid course discusses the topic of bullying. To learn more about Psychological First Aid, click here.

TriEx at the Safeguard Conference

TriEx is pleased to announce that we'll be exhibiting at the next Safeguard National Health and Safety Conference in Auckland on May 30 and 31.

This year's conference is putting the focus on trust. Good work requires an environment of trust in its workers. These workplaces tend to have the best health and safety outcomes.
Trust is a critical element of creating resilient, high-performing cultures. It needs to exist in all parts of the health and safety ecosystem: between the workers and H&S professionals, between H&S professionals and management, between different functions of a business, across PCBUs and between the regulators and regulated.

TriEx General Manager Sarah O'Connell will be appearing at the conference, along with Gallagher Bassett Business Development Manager Duncan Leuchars.

The Safeguard National Health and Safety Conference is on May 30 and 31 at Sky City Auckland. To learn more about the conference, click here. We will be in Exhibition booth #26.

Learning First Aid can save lives

The key aims of First Aid can be summarized in three key points:
Preserve Life
Prevent Further Harm
Promote Recovery

TriEx recommends to have at least two people trained in First Aid at each work site and workplace (and on each floor if the workplace is a multi-storied building), who can respond in the event that someone requires First Aid attention. However, everyone can benefit from being trained in First Aid, as you never know when or where you might find a medical emergency. It could be family or a friend.

Our First Aid courses will ensure that all participants feel confident that they have the necessary skills to provide vital and lifesaving first aid assistance in their workplace. Our trainers have a reputation for creating a fantastic learning environment, with courses that are engaging, fun and informative.

We're currently offering $25 off any 8 Hour Workplace First Aid course until June 15 (excluding Lifesaver Specials). To take advantage of this offer, use the promo code FA25OFF when you book your course online.

Contaminants in the workplace

By far the largest proportion of workplace contaminants are taken into the body by inhalation, upwards of 85% of exposures can be attributed to the inhalation of contaminants.

Not all exposures cause an immediate effect. Some will have an acute effect, while others can take days, weeks, months or years to manifest. Asbestos may take up to 40 years to present symptoms, while Silica may take up to 10 - 20 years. Some dusts and fumes can sensitise the worker so that any further exposure causes physical effects such as Asthma or Heart palpitations.

WorkSafe is issuing Improvement Notices for companies to monitor their employee's health, and any hazards that they are being exposed to. These improvement notices are focusing on Air Quality (Dusts and Fumes, especially welding fumes).

Our Occupational Hygienists can work with you and the WorkSafe inspector issuing the notice to ensure you're meeting your legal obligations in providing a safe workplace. It's best to ensure you're monitoring the air quality of your workplace prior to having a noticed issued however.

TriEx's Occupational Hygienists can provide a wide range of Air Quality assessments including Dust, Fumes, Carbon Monoxide, Diesel Fumes along with many other gases such as Ammonia and Ozone. To learn more contact enquiries@triex.co.nz.

TriEx News Bites

World Smokefree Day

World Smokefree Day is coming up on May 31. This year’s theme for World Smokefree Day is "it's about whānau" with a focus on celebrating New Zealand's smokefree achievements.

The majority of New Zealanders are smokefree and want smokefree environments. Having smokefree whānau, homes, workplaces and public spaces is worth celebrating!

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death and disease in New Zealand (about 5,000 a year), ahead of suicide (510 a year), motor vehicle accidents (315 a year) and drowning (81 a year).

Having a smokefree workplace can contribute to better health outcomes for your team and help those who are trying to quit by removing triggers. To learn more click here.

TriEx Nurses Saving Lives

Recently one of our Registered Nurses, Alex Pajel was faced with an emergency situation whilst working with one of our clients. The decisions she made saved a life.

Alex was onsite as a contracted nurse to one of our clients where she encountered an employee who was stumbling and looked very unwell.

After Alex checked their blood pressure, she realised the person had a flaccid arm, one side of their face was drooping, and their speech had become slurred and incoherent - typical signs of a Stroke.

Alex told the client they needed to call an ambulance right away and have them admitted to hospital. The person was admitted to intensive care, and we've since been told they are recovering very well!

When someone's experiencing a stroke it's critical to seek medical attention immediately. Click here to learn about the symptoms of a stroke.

WorkSafe NZ Prosecutions

Agriculture contractor Michael Vining Contracting Limited was charged after the death of a worker who had worked 200 hours in the fortnight prior to his death.

In October 2016, a worker for the company had been assisting with harvesting operations on a farm in Pukekawa. He logged a 16.75 hour day before departing the farm, taking a tractor home in preparation for the next day’s work. At 2.45am he crashed the tractor and died as a result of injuries sustained during the accident. WorkSafe NZ's investigation had founded the worker had worked 197.25 hours in the two weeks leading up to the incident.

Fatigue was identified as the most likely cause of the accident. The company was fined $10,000, with reparations of $80,000 ordered.

John Carstairs Robertson was sentenced on health and safety charges relating to unsafe removal of asbestos.

In February 2017, Mr Robertson began work on a property to remove asbestos containing material from a shed. His method of removal didn't follow any current standard procedure for asbestos removal, and involved using hand tools to break up asbestos containing materials. No face masks or proper PPE were used, and no management of airborne asbestos particles was implemented.

Mr Robertson's conduct put both himself and a worker at risk, as well as the occupier, site visitors and those in the neighbouring area.

A fine of $35,000 was ordered, as well as reparations of $2580.59 and costs of $1297.50.
