Be All There

An obscure gardener died in a small town.  His name was Hubert Bales, and he was one of the shyest men around.  When he talked, he squirmed, blinked his eyes rapidly and smiled nervously.  Hubert never ran in influential circles.  He grew shrubs and trees, working with his hands the plot of land left by his father.  He was anything but an extrovert.  Yet when Hubert died, his funeral was the largest in the history of the little town.  There were so many people that they filled even the balcony of the church.

Why did such a shy man win the hearts of so many people?  Simply because, for all his shyness, Hubert knew how to make friends.  He had mastered the principles of caring, and for more than 60 years he had put people first.  Perhaps because they recognized that his friendliness was an extra effort for someone so reserved, people loved him back.  By the hundreds.

ELL Bible Study the Simple Way

This year, we were pleased when a family from our Monday night ESL class decided to join our church. They were from a Catholic background but seemed comfortable at our Anglican church. The children quickly fit into Sunday School, and the family said they enjoyed the service. After a few months, I asked them if they understood the sermon. The reply was “about half”. When I asked if they would like an ELL Bible study during the sermon, they responded positively.  A couple of other ESL class members who had been attending our church were happy to join us.

Our Sunday morning service begins with hymns and praise singing, followed by three Bible readings. The words of the Bible readings and the songs are projected onto a screen, so it is easy for our learners to follow.  We go out for our study...

Cooperative ESL Ministries Society is an interdenominational Christian organization of volunteers from different backgrounds who believe in serving people of all faiths and cultures.  We advocate respect, understanding, and appreciation for people of all cultural, religious, and language backgrounds.

We train, network, mobilize, and inspire hundreds of current and prospective volunteers who work directly with newcomers in Calgary.  We support church ministries and community-based programs that serve newcomers to Canada by providing a variety of services.
