I wrote this newsletter from an airplane as one part of our team flew one way and another part the other way over the country to and from client workshops. We've all been working a little too hard this past month, yet I always feel lucky to be a part of this team.
This week, we shared some tough insights with a client not about their community but about themselves as they pursue community. We were nervous to share unsolicited culture feedback, and we wrapped it up neatly into the final two minutes of an hour's worth of insights. But as it turns out, the community strategy that we then developed in our workshop largely hinged on that organizational and cultural feedback. Some teams simply aren't culturally ready for building community, or they are culturally at risk. They are not yet comfortable with being unscripted or unpolished in public. They may be unable to raise the bar on accountability and execution. Perhaps they have low pride or engagement amongst their own team. Sometimes, the most impactful place to start with community is with yourselves.
