The Featured Creature
by Linda Spielman
I’m more common than you think, but my nocturnal habits mean I’m seldom seen. I don’t really do what my name implies, but I do ride the air currents almost as well as my winged counterparts.
Who Am I?

Camp Earth Connection Summer Interns
Hello all! My name is Matthew Hecking, and I am a recent college graduate, an avid outdoorsman, and an intern at Camp Earth Connection for the 2018 season. I currently work at Cornell University’s School of Integrative Plant Science, where I continue to pursue my career as a plant ecologist; Here at CEC however, I will be overseeing the greenhouse and gardens on site to ensure that they are bursting with food and barren of weeds! If you see me during your time here, feel free to start up a conversation with me about the natural world, linguistics, my duties at CEC, or anything else that you are interested in.

My name is Bret Serbin and I'll be living and helping out with Camp Earth Connection this summer. I'll also be working as an Outreach Coordinator at the US Fish and Wildlife Service in Cortland. I love the outdoors, so I'm really excited to spend my summer at Camp Earth Connection and meet fellow outdoors enthusiasts. I'm originally from Pittsburgh, PA, but I'm looking forward to joining this new community.

My name is Gabriel Skamla and I recently moved to the Ithaca area as a design/ build apprentice. I am an architecture graduate and I am pursuing my passion for design and craft while also trying to incorporate my interest in humanitarianism. Prior to moving to Ithaca, I completed one year of service as an AmeriCorps member with Habitat for Humanity in Colorado. During the time I spent in the Rockies, traveling the country, and even more so currently, I realized my deepening appreciation for nature. I am very thankful to have met Susan and for her to let me stay on her campground. If seeing the forest grow and turn green over the past few weeks is any indication of the coming months, I know I will find my time valuable here.
