Join our Stop LGBT+ Hate Crime event

An event highlighting LGBT+ hate crime and the impact it has on the community will be held in Haringey this month.

The Stop LGBT+ Hate Crime event – organised by Haringey Council, BAME LGBT+ arts charity Wise Thoughts and Haringey Police – will look at the scale of hate crime, both in the borough, and nationwide, and explore how local groups and the police are working to tackle it.

The event on May 24 is free, and will be held in the Wood Green Library Business Lounge between 5.30pm and 6.30pm. Booking is not required.

Park Road lido re-opens

Swimmers can once again make a splash at Park Road lido, which re-opened yesterday following emergency repairs.

Fusion Lifestyle, who manage our leisure centres, were forced to close the Crouch End pool in December due to a technical fault that saw cracks in the pool floor make it impossible to maintain a safe water level.

Since then, work has been carried out to bring the lido back up to scratch.

Lane swimming sessions will restart from 7am to 9.30am, 11am to 1pm and 6pm to 7pm. An official opening day, packed with family fun, will be held on May 26. More details will be published on the Park Road centre’s website.

To keep up to date on all the latest news on the lido, visit the Park Road Pools and Fitness website (external link) or Facebook page (external link).

Having a ball

The Haringey Hawks have won the National Under-16 Junior Basketball Title after an outstanding season.

The team’s coach Franck Batimba praised the boys, and said: “We have boys from all across Haringey who have worked so hard and deserved to win. To become National Champions is a remarkable achievement. When young people have a focus and are supported they can achieve some amazing results. I hope this will help to inspire many young people in the community.”

Franck has also been appointed as Head Coach of the Haringey Sixth Form College’s Basketball Academy.

Apply to the college, on White Hart Lane.

The sessions will be held:

  • Tuesday May 22, 10am to 2pm at Costa Coffee, Wood Green Shopping City
  • Wednesday May 23, 10am to 2pm at Wood Green Library, High Road, Wood Green
  • Thursday May 24, 6pm to 8pm at the Cypriot Centre, Earlham Grove, Wood Green
