Dear <<First name>>,

It has been a busy time at African Promise over the first few months of the year.

Like all charities and businesses, behind the scenes we have been grappling with the new data protection regulation - the GDPR - and working out what it means for us and what we need to do to prepare for it.

Meanwhile, on the ground, our building teams have been pushing forward with projects across a number of our partner schools despite frequent heavy rain showers and storms over the last 2-3 months which have (finally!) brought good news for our lunch programme.

Elsewhere, on the fundraising front, we are grateful for a number of individuals and organisations that have helped us to raise over £90,000 so far this year.

Read more on all of this, and more, below. Enjoy!
Important notice regarding data protection

As you may be aware, new EU data protection legislation - the GDPR - comes into force from Friday.

This regulation sets out new laws on how organisations, including charities like African Promise, gain consent to use personal data, and provides individuals with greater rights to, and control of, their personal data.

As someone who has asked to receive updates when donating to us or has signed up to our mailing list via our website we believe we have your consent to send you these emails so you do not need to do anything if you want to keep hearing from us. However, if you no longer wish to receive updates from us you can unsubscribe from our mailing list by clicking the link at the bottom of this email.

To comply with the new regulations we have revised our Privacy Policy to include details of exactly when, how and why we collect personal data, how we store it and keep it safe, and your rights regarding the personal we hold on you. As an individual whose data we hold, we would encourage you to take a moment to read this.

If you have any questions then please do not hesitate to get in touch.

An update from our partner schools

The first few months of the year are always busy as they follow the festive period when we raise the majority of our income, and this year has been no exception. Our building teams have been particularly busy and so far in 2018 we have provided an additional 50,000 litres of permanent rainwater storage capacity, installed lighting in 24 classrooms and continued with a major classroom rehabilitation and construction programme.

Away from building works, our Feeding Minds lunch programme is now in its fourth year of providing a daily meal to all 2,500+ pupils across our partner schools. Thankfully food prices have been falling back towards pre-drought levels since the turn of the year so we anticipate (and hope for!) a much less challenging year in 2018 than last.

Support an educational trip for 100 pupils

This year, for the first time, we are planning to fund an educational trip that will benefit pupils from all our partner schools rather than just selected schools as has been the case in the past. The two-day trip to the coastal city of Mombasa, which will include a visit to sites of historic and educational interest (as well as the beach and airport!), will provide a rare opportunity for learning outside the classroom for 100 lucky pupils.

"I thank all those who made these children’s dreams of seeing such amazing sites come true. This will definitely have a big impact on their studies as well as their lives."

Can you help us raise the £2,000 that we need to make this trip happen?

Fundraising round-up

David Harkin, CEO of educational social enterprise 7BillionIdeas, braved the hottest London Marathon on record in April to raise more than £3,000 for our work.

Jonathan Peverley, a teacher at Oundle School, has raised over £550 (and counting) from his participation in the Burghley Rat Race - a 13.1mile run over the world's largest assault course

Hazel's Footprints Trust has pledged an annual donation of £5,000 to cover the cost of the lunch programme and two teacher salaries we fund at Ngambenyi Primary. The Souter Charitable Trust has also supported our lunch programme for a fourth successive year with a donation of £4,000.

Students from Queen Elizabeth II High School on the Isle of Man represented African Promise in the island's annual inter-school One World Charity Challenge in March and raised more than £650 for us in prize money and from their fundraising activities.

Thank you all (and our other recent donors) for your generous support!

Save the date!
