1. Stroud Against the Cuts AGM 2018

As ever with our organising meetings, supporters of Stroud Against the Cuts' aims are welcome to attend our AGM on 3rd June, from 6.30pm.

This will be short formal meeting where we:

1. Provide a brief report on activities over the past year
2. Assess our financial situation and expected changes over the year to come
3. Elect officers - including at minimum a Chair, Secretary and Treasurer
4. Identify our priorities for the coming year
5. Review our constitution and make any necessary amendments

We invite nominations for the positions of Chair, Secretary and Treasurer (positions curently held by James Beecher, Christine Stockwell, and Hannah Basson respectively, who will be standing down).

These are voluntary positions. If you are interested, we can advise on the workload they involve but at minimum this includes attendance at almost all of our monthly 2-hour evening organising meetings (a few absences are unavoidable but we seek a degree of commitment).

We also welcome nominations for other posts, and have in the past elected a number of "Committee Members". Applicants should notify our Secretary of nomination by email or text by 7 days before the AGM (Sunday 27th May), and must be able to attend the AGM on the 3rd June: chrisstockwell100@gmail.com / 07717 491587.

For election of officers, votes can be cast by those who reside in Stroud district, and have taken part in a Stroud Against the Cuts action or meeting during the past 12 months.

The AGM will be followed by a screening of the film Dispossession: The Great Social Housing Swindle.

2. Housing FILM SCREENING

We will screen "Dispossession - The Great Social Housing Swindle" after our Annual General Meeting on Sunday 3rd June, at the Lansdown Hall, from 7.30pm. Entry is free but we will be collecting donations to cover costs and help fund our NHS 70th anniversary celebration events - please donate generously!

The film explores the agenda behind the neglect, demolition and regeneration of council estates in the U.K. over the past thirty years. The film reveals how individuals and communities are fighting against the state and private developers, as they try to save their homes from demolition, while investigating the decisions that turned a crisis into a tragedy. In 2017 housing rose to the top of the British political agenda for the first time in a generation. But despite the media spotlight, few stories examined the catastrophic long-term failures that resulted in a chronic shortage of social housing in the United Kingdom. Dispossession does. It is the story of people who know that housing is not an expensive luxury, but a fundamental human right.

Watch the trailer above or at Dispossession: The Great Social Housing Swindle - Official Trailer.

We will be joined by guest speaker Laurie Davies, Town Councillor for Slade ward (Labour) who will be present for a discussion after the film.

Share the Dispossession Facebook event and invite your friends!

3. Sunday 20th May - Chartist Film -
EXTRAS REQUIRED!

This weekend is the anniversary (near enough) of May 21st 1839 when the Chartists gathered on Selsley Common.
Local people are involved in a project to make a film about this event - "Days of Hope". They are intending to film a gathering this Sunday as part of the film.

If you are free between 10.30 and about 1.30 and can make it up to Selsley Common (meet in the car part) please join them and be part of a film about Stroud's history - placards and banners are welcome.

Watch the video of Stroud people reading The Charter, and learn more via Days of Hope - The Chartists in Stroud on Facebook.

4. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED for 70 years of our NHS events!

You don't need to know anything about the NHS or PFI - though it would help if you do - we just need someone to keep an eye on the photographs, hand out information and collect donations. Email: nhs70stroud@gmail.com

For the #OurNHS70 march in London on Saturday 30th June we need stewards who can help us ensure everyone has an enjoyable day at the demonstration and gets back to the coach safely. You don't need to have done anything similar before, we can provide you with all the information you need. Email: nhs70stroud@gmail.com

For our celebration day in Lansdown Hall and Bank Gardens on 7th July we need stewards who can guide people around the event and collect donations, and other helpers. Please get in touch if you'd like to be involved: nhs70stroud@gmail.com

People Vs PFI Exhibition-How come we’re still paying for this?

Lansdown Gallery, 25th June - 1st July

A photographic exhibition aimed at raising awareness and understanding of "Private Finance Initiatives" (PFI) in the UK. The photographs are mainly the work of Marion Macalpine (whose work has been shown before at the "How Come we Didn't Know?" exhibition in Line Gallery).

The exhibition illustrates the range of PFI deals across different sectors and throughout the UK, including schools, health, roads, prisons, housing and refuse into power schemes. It provides an overview of the extent to which PFI contracts have swallowed up public funds and channelled money into corporate coffers.
