AT Tip:
Borrowing Assistive Technology from ABLE Tech

ABLE Tech launched a new website (https://www.okabletech.org/) in March of 2018.  The same great services of borrowing AT and reporting demonstrations and success stories are still available.  The list of items available to loan is now located under the heading “Guide to All Services” from the home page for ABLE Tech, by clicking on the Device Loan Program.  Anyone can search the available inventory and request a trial/loan of AT.

For SoonerStart personnel, the ability to complete a demonstration log is also available on the new website.  It can be found under the “Community Services” tab on the home screen.  Then on the far right of the screen select “SoonerStart AT Assessment Kits.”  At the bottom of the page that opens there is a link entitled “Access Oklahoma ABLE Tech’s & SoonerStart’s AT Assessment Form.”  This will ask all the same information asked in the paper form of a demonstration.

Pediatric Items Available!

Gait trainerOklahoma ABLE Tech operates the Oklahoma Equipment Exchange (OEE) program to transfer durable medical equipment (DME) items that have been previously, gently used and are now available for other young children in need.

The OEE acquired a Mustang R82 Gate Trainer.  It is FREE to anyone who has a child who could utilize this device.  It must find a new home by June 15, 2018.  The Mustang is developed as a basic anterior walker for children with disabilities, who need supplementary assistance with their daily walking.  It can also be used as a posterior gait training, depending on the child’s level of ability.  The user is placed at the center of the Mustang which provides stability of the upper body and enables the user to focus energy on walking.  It was donated to OEE by a consumer and is in very good condition.

ABLE Tech realizes the liability concerns that may surround using equipment that has already been used and encourages those acquiring the items to have equipment checked out by a DME Provider with expertise in the area of the device.

Per OEE policies and procedures: ABLE Tech shall not be liable for any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, costs, expenses (including but not limited to settlements, judgments, court costs and reasonable attorney's fees) fines and penalties, arising out of any actual or alleged injury, loss, or damage of any nature whatsoever in connection with the sale or use of any device donated, purchased or sold under the OEE.

If you choose to obtain a piece (or pieces) of DME on behalf of children you serve, please consider the above stipulations as you take on the responsibility of the safety of the child regarding the use of the equipment.
The OEE currently has several DME items available for children to assist with mobility/seating/positioning, to see a full list please visit: Oklahoma Equipment Exchange: Pediatric Items

For more information on these items and/or to see other available items, please contact Diana Sargent at 1-800-257-1705.

SoonerStart Recognition Award for 3rd Quarter

Victor using iPadViktor is a three-year-old who wanted to be able to interact with people around him.  However, due to his diagnosis of an expressive language delay, he wasn’t able to communicate effectively verbally.  His Oklahoma County SoonerStart team reached out to Oklahoma ABLE Tech to borrow an iPad with the Words For Life (LAMP) communication application.  He was a very quick study when learning to use the iPad as a form of expressing himself.

The Oklahoma County SoonerStart speech language pathologist helped to complete all of the necessary paperwork for Viktor to obtain his very own iPad and communication application through insurance.  He received his iPad just days before his 3rd birthday.  This would not have been possible without SoonerStart and ABLE Tech working together with Viktor’s family!
